Hello! OK, it's finally time I made my inaugural de-lurk. Here is the apparently customary apology for being on the digest. _Ralf And Florian_ the most contemporary Kraftwerk release? For me it would have to be _Kraftwerk 2_. Its proto-ambient, lo-fi, banged-out-quickly vibe reminds me of a *lot* of experimental 90's artists. Funny, I thought about name-dropping that album during the 70's ambient thread. What goes around comes around. BTW, whilst on the subject, anyone know where to find the album by Organisation, who became Kraftwerk? Oh yeah, and... what's with all the slagging RDJ because he gives the press' leg the odd yank? God knows they need it. Peace through eclectism, Mitch

Remember which list you're on. :) I definitely agree with what you're saying - I was quite astounded listening to Kraftwerk 2 recently - but I don't think it's the most in sync with what I see as being "IDM". Later stuff has more of an electro, and, well, just programmed bent, which is far more in line with what the bulk of stuff discussed on here is like. Michael (I presume "experimental" is being used as a synonym for "industrial in the 90s" :) "You know what? with what you're saying - I was quite astounded listening to Kraftwerk 2 recently - but I don't think it's the most in sync with what I see as being "IDM". << True, I was thinking in terms of the artists' whole body of work vis-a-vis music today in general, not one genre. But it's been said here before, and recently too, what a melange of influences coalesced to form IDM. Just trying to stir the pot a little. ;) <soapbox> Tunnel vision spells a quick and ugly death for music scenes, whereas eclectism is, IMO, our culture's greatest weapon against prejudice. </soapbox> I didn't specifically mean "industrial" when I said "experimental" though. That would be Kraftwerk S/T. It's sad to hear that they're resting on their laurels, but they've covered a lot of ground: how many artists have made important records in the prog-rock, disco AND techno-pop genres without falling from grace along the way? Ya gotta love that. Lesser artists would have lapsed into self-parody long before these guys. As far as specifically IDM-flavored stuff, I'd have to say Kraftwerk peaked with Computer World. "Numbers" still sounds fresh to me. Oh, BTW, sorry about all that code crap in my last post. Hopefully I've got the problem fixed now. So what about that Organisation album then? :) Peace through eclectism, Mitch
