I saw a copy of a 2xlp set from DC records called Beat Classic. It is a collection of rare proto hiphop from the early and mid 80's. As the cover's biline ('Fuck Trip Hop') suggests, the tracks are abstract, spacy, groovey, and downright weird. Oh, and they predate the triphop movement by 12 years. Has anyone else heard or seen this? It's an interesting collection. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jonathan Logan Work: 415 543-2800 UI Droog Home: 415 487-0424 CriticalPath, Inc. Has anyone else heard or seen this? Yeah, I've heard it, and think it's damn worthwhile. Perhaps not consistently rocking, but some wicked moments and the album as a whole is just so damn freaky. It sounds to me like people with really crap budgets (mainly) pushing their gear in weird directions. From memory it seeks to fill in the gap between electro and hip hop as most people know it. So it's experiments with the use of samplers and effects boxes, and keeping it funky in a nice broad definition of the word. Got it last year when it came out (finally it was promised for about a year) and it is very nice. Not as slamming as I'd expected but as noted very spacey especially Ramazele Vs K-Rob - Beat Bop which has stream of conciouness rap mumble thing on it and a violin (that I believe is played by the Eugene guy off of the Beastie Boys' Eugenes Lament). There are harder tracks like Steady B's They Call Us Def (instrumental) and Craig G's Shout (actually these two are slamming, but a spacey way) but the general vibe is of Hip-Hop as "art" from the days when anything went. Also does anyone know of any other DC recordings releases apart from these. Depth Charge - Number 9/ Hubba Hubba Hubba Depth Charge - Disco Vixen, Disco Airlines and Disco Alien. Deadly Avenger - The Bayou and the one with Super Disco Brakes Vol2 etc Beat Classics Alexander Dark No URL's please I don't have access. Steve.N

and Craig G's Shout< Yess! This is a pretty wicked compilation - I was going to chime in a bit earlier, but I couldn't remember the name of the track that really knocks me out each time I play it. But that's the one - 'Shout' by Craig G. F***, that track is hard as f***ing nails. Think Run DMC's 'Sucker MCs', distilled until there's nowt left but the concentrated essence of 'BOOM CRASH B-B-BOOM CRASH' and a wild shouty rap over the top. God, I love that stuff. Damon.

Yeah, that track is the shiznit. I used to tape a radio show back in the mid-eighties where I had my 1st exposure to stuff like Ministry's _Twitch_ and they dropped Craig G's "Shout" in the mix. Needless to say, that tape got massive play (hey I sound like Bullworth ;). Anyway, I was really happy to see that track on _Beat Classics_. By the way, I've always wondered if Craig G is the same person as MC Craig G, anyone know? _____________________________________________ E r i c F r a n s :: epf@internetconnect.net [cellular] http://www.internetconnect.net/~kdkates/epf [so-cal idm] http://www.internetconnect.net/~kdkates/epf/scidm [si-{cut}.db] http://www.internetconnect.net/~kdkates/epf/benford "If you ever discover that what you're seeing is a play within a play, just slow down, take a deep breath, and hold on for the ride of your life." -- Jack Handey
