The "change continues"... Anyone who digs the futuristic d'n'b of Photek and Source Direct should definitely check out the work of Klute (not the so-called industrial act on Cleopatra - God no!). Klute (former drummer of Punk rock band the Stupids - Yeah!) has been creating some of the finest and most challenging d'n'b to date! Recording as Klute on Certificate 18, Override on Octopus, Spectre on Fresh 86, and Forensic on Flavour... He mixes live drum breaks with some of the baddest and most intricate rhythms around and ties it all up in a jazzy little package! Definitely a name to watch for in '97! discreetly, L.B. Oh yeah... If anyone has a copy of the first Klute 12" on Cert. 18 they wanna sell or trade, talk to me - I can hook ya up real good!

In the shop the other day, saw a CD called 'Klute', titled 'Total Self'. The label said (made by the store owner):' if you like Photek/Source Direct, you'll like this'. Ok so I bought. It's a 5 track EP, and I must say it's pretty damn good. Actually I like it better then recent Photek output or Source Direct. It's definitely hardstep type stuff with metallic klangy sounds, but it does not drag on like the above mentioned CD's; it has a nice progression to it. Anyway the sticker also said an LP was on the way. Does anyone have any more info on this release? If you dig Boymerang, Leon Marr, Photek or Source Direct, pick this up. bye Nate

i thought this might be the case when i bought the Lexis 12" with Autechre and Klute mixes.. but now i'm not so sure there is a connection. clasus larsen, as far as i know, is still making leaether strip sounding material. be interesting if it was though. chris.

Nope. The drum'n'bass Klute is not the same as the industrial-metal Klute.

"Total Self" is on Certificate 18. 4 track 12", 5 track CDEP. Pretty good stuff - not groundbreaking, but cool in that Photek/Source Direct/etc. sorta way. Greg

I don't know if this is the same Klute, but a while back, on a really bad industrial comp (the name of the comp escapes me.. it had the word "industrial" in the title, though), I heard a song (the name of the song escapes me as well) by a group called Klute, and it was fucking terrible. Some guy with a really bad voice singing over rehashed electro-industrial-thrash-metal music. Terrible. === chris wicks cwicks@rocketmail.com http://members.xoom.com/cwicks np: autechre "amber" _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Hi all, So far no-one seems to have mentioned who Klute actually is, despite managing to say who he isn't (although they probably will have by the time this gets to the list!). Anyway he is a bloke called Tom Whithers who used to drum for The Stupids. He also has recorded as Spectre (for Fresh 86), Override (for Octopus) and coming soon non-drum-and-bass tracks as Tongue (for Domino/Series 500) for a release called "In Cheek" (geddit?!) And I agree that "Total Self" is a killer and probably deserved more exposure. It's the best of his work so far, which is always a good thing to be able to say about an artist. Although why they didn't include the Dom and Roland mix of Perception on the vinyl (whine, moan) I have no idea 'cos it roasts. Anyway, his LP should be wicked (someone asked about that - there's no release date that I've seen, just "coming soon" type rumours). But until then there are some remixes (one by Photek) of Silent Weapons from "Total Self" coming out soon also on Cert 18. That's all for now, Graham. -- [b]r[e]a[k]b[e]a[t] [e]r[a] _ Roni Size Reprazent Krust Die Suv Full Cycle Dope http://www2.prestel.co.uk/lwtcdi/era/ Dragon V Philly Blunt Chronic Protocol [profiles][discographies][sounds][interviews][news]

I picked this up about 6-8 months ago, and posted a little mini review of it then. It's a pretty stong EP of 'hardstep' type drumnbass, with a good sense of uniqueness to it. It has sort of a melancholy feel akin to maybe photek or source direct, but not as dark as that. Maybe more along the line of Boymerang material. I quite liked it when I got it, I think someone on the list pointed out Tom Whithers is/was a drummer for some indie rock band... I believe also ther is a full length Klute record around the corner... peace Nate On Tue, 20 Oct 1998, Irene McC wrote:

I'm answering my own question here ::: just found this in PJ's s/kimo new releases list: Date sent: Fri, 16 Oct 1998 13:37:25 -0400 KLUTE: Casual Bodies CD (CERTIFICATE 18). RELEASED 11/9. $17.99 "Tom's reputation as a major player in the world of drum & bass has risen dramatically while recording as Klute for Certificate 18, early home to Photek, Source Direct, Digital and Danny C. Klute's blend of intoxicating textures and innovative complex breakbeat manipulation is found across all 11 tracks; he shows scant regard for the myriad sub-decisions within the genre and insistently ploughs his own path. It is the sound of an artist stretching the template of drum & bass to its very limits. <><><><><><> I *
