I think it's pretty lame that Warp records muscled that site down. I don't understand what the difference would be in posting MP3s on a web page and playing all of those tracks on the radio. When Tri Repitae came out, I played it in its entirety on the air specifically for the benefit of those in my area who had no place to buy it. No breaks, no announcements, the full CD over the airwaves so people could record it. Does Warp go around suing everyone who listens to Autechre on the radio, and do the Autechre guys get really offended when their music is on the air? If they feel so offended that people want to hear their music then why don't they quit making it? They could just stay in a closet with headphones playing with themselves. Personally, I have invested a nice chunk of cash in their music. As an artist, if I heard that an individual had travelled 500 miles to spend money on a picture I'd made, I would take that as a huge compliment. I would be humbled beyond belief to discover that masses of people had done the same...Yet here is Autechre being offended that people like what they do... I cannot fathom that mentality. Screw the lawyers! All they want is the legal fees anyway. They probably listen to Michael Bolton. If you'd like to put those MP3s back on the web, mail them to me and I'll post them on a dummy I.P. If Warp has the money to waste trying to find out who to sue, let them waste it. Ethically I should sell all my Autechre CDs and let them collect dust in the used bin. Those jerks don't seem to realize what it takes to be a fan of this music. 3 years ago I sold a copy of b12's electrosoma...(I needed the money)...LAST WEEK I went to the same store and bought it back from them. It had not moved in 3 years...no one here knew what it was...If this is how Autechre responds to their supporters, perhaps they don't need the support. i can't believe you're a dj and you don't know about ascap/bmi... your radio station pays dues to ascap/bmi and the money goes to the artists! of course, in the case of autechre, they probably don't get anything since ascap/bmi doesn't have an accurate way of tracking the "small potatoes" artists. but in theory, they are getting their due compensation for radio play. the ascap/bmi tracking system we do at kuci is shotty at best. they pick *3 days* (or so) out of the year (i think thats all..) and collect the play lists. id be willing to bet that folks hearing the stuff on the radio, even if they tape it, bring in more money to the artists by buying the releases because they were exposed to them. hell, id bet the sites that have been banned generated more money through exposure/record sales than bmi. but thats just my guess. OH. i have never taken a track from a website, but i have bought shit used, copied stuff and played tracks on the radio. i personally dont see much of a difference, *especially* if no money is being exchanged (though in the case of used items...) chris.

Not that I really want to be a part of discussion but just to clear things up. When played on the radio artists DO get money for it. At least if they're connected to an association (like STIM in scandinavia) - which most bands/artists are. Even unsigned band like Plod for example. That's part of the income you have with making music. I've heard the latest Plod CD is available on that Hotline server as well (not that I ever do MP3 downloads, but so I've heard - anyone correct me if I'm wrong), which is cool with me I think since we still own the copyright to all of those tracks and with the fact that the CD was only made in 100 copies. If we, however, release those same tracks on a widely available 12" or CD I don't think I'd dig it as much. Since everyone can get a hold of a CD burner and easily make their own copy of it.
