Saw Tortoise and Oval last night. It was great. What I want to know is this: Has anybody figured out what "oval-ization" software Markus Popp is using on his Powerbook? I wanted to ask him but I couldn't track him down after the show. A review of "Dok" in The Wire mentioned "Maxplay" but thats only a player for OpCode's Max. Is it Max? Someone must know. Thanks.

Max has some commands that refererence the internal CD drive in your computer. If your drive has quick enough seek/access time you can do some spectacular stuff, like finding and storing peaks and lows and looping things in real time. It's a great environment. I'm sure it would be VERY easy to ape mr. Popp with Max (if that's your thing). On a similar note; did any of you catch Achim Wollsceid in your town? He played here in Boston at the Gallery Insekt downtown a few days ago. A good portion of his music were pieces performed on these voltage-pulse switches screwed into the sockets of 16 overhead lamps strewn out along the ceiling of the gallery scientifically to produce the widest spread. The switches were controlled by some gold-brick like interface controlled by a PC laptop. He created his own software and had about 10 different compostions for this setup. When it got going, it was pure sahko/bouncing ball type stuff, and the effect of the music depended on your location in the gallery. Brilliant. There were also some sound-catching plaques set up, which stored crowd noise and responded to audio above a certain frequency. When the "show" officially started, Achim read a text, while the software spit out reandom excerpts of the collected ambient room sounds (including a reocurring loud bit when someone knocked his amplifier over twenty minutes earlier). There was also some typical noise-performance, which was a little droll. But the clackers, man, really fucking perplexing. Well worth checking out. There's a CD of this stuff (I believe) called 'Moves' on his label, Selektion (also home to RLW and, originally, Bernhard Gunter). I'm not sure just how well a stereo representation would hold up (it's really a 360 degree experience), but it's worth a shot. -Hrvatski ___________________________________ Reckankreuzungs Klankewerkzeuge & Company PO Box 382864 Cambridge, MA 02238 - 2864 is online @ http://www.tiac.net/users/sheket

Just curious about something vaguely related: in the recent article about autechre, there was a reference to a piece of music someone released called "Markus popp can kiss my redneck ass". Anybody know the scoop on this? It made me chuckle, at least...is it just someone calling Popp's bluff and saying he's pretentious? By the way, the Oval remix of DJ Vadim is top-notch stuff. It's by Lesser. Sort of a jokey phased out 70's jazz funk disc skipping thing. It's on the American Experience" CD/12". Those guys (the whole VC crew) are definitely aping Popp, whether serious or not. Lesser and some other blokes put out a 2CD called (pretentiously enough) 'Disc' which is just 2 1/2 hours of skipping CD crap with no rhyme or reason. Pure emulation. Total garbage. But the Lesser stuff, however prevalent his humor may be, is pretty great, sort of a shut-in's version of a Spymania record, assembled from samples of all of the horrid rock bands he was in over the years. Someone had to do it... Hrvatski. ___________________________________ Reckankreuzungs Klankewerkzeuge & Company PO Box 382864 Cambridge, MA 02238 - 2864 is online @ http://www.tiac.net/users/sheket

I believe it's software of his own creation. Occasional rumors that he has plans to release a version that will remix inly sounds on the CD-ROM, followed later by a version that will remix any CD you stick in. But it's still only vaporware Sam

i managed to ask him before his set (i'm guessing by the date, you went to the houston show, too?) however, his answer was less than helpful...he basically said that he used "various programs"...and that they were "very simple"...also, stating that it simply played a background loop while playing samples over it... i managed to see what he did with the keyboard, tho (now why didn't he turn the monitor so i could watch that, too?)...basically it looked like he (and sounded like) selected and ran background loops with his mouse, and the selected samples (also with the mouse) which he ran whenver he wanted to by pressing the space bar...i know this probably doesn't help any with determining what software he used...i just found it interesting... -brad
