i'm quite partial to transglobal underground although they are wildly inconsistent from track to track. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Plan: Eat right, exercise regularly, die anyway.

Yip, I agree with this statement. I have just bought EASTERN UPRISING : Dance Music from the Eastern Underground and although this is a '97 release, which might well have been reviewed at the time (although I can't remember) here's the tracklisting and it's a VERY fine, energetic mix of D&B influences with sitars, tablas, fem vox _a la_ Natasha Atlas, even some rapping. 1. JOI - Goddess 2. CORE - Cocoon 3. EARTHTRIBE - Sitar Funk 4. BLACK STAR LINER - Harmon Dub 5. SAFRI GOES TO BOLLYWOOD - Dum Maro Dum 6. KROME ASSASINS - Return of the Shankar 7. TANGO PADRE - Temple of Boom 8. BEDOUIN ASCENT - Ruffistahn 9. ASIAN DUB FOUNDATION - R.A.F.I. 10. MASTERS OF SOUND - Loaded Mantra 11. EARTHTRIBE - Rude Boy 12. PATRINA - Om 1997 /// SONY I *

Seconded. This is a great collection, even despite the fact that it's on a major label (Sony/Columbia). :) It's a UK only release as far as I know, so it may be a bit difficult for North Americans to track down. But it's worth hunting for. Other comps on the same tip somewhat include: ANHOKA: Sounds Of The Asian Underground (compiled by Talvin Singh, so you might find it filed under his name - it's on Quango in the US, Mango/Island in the UK) EAST-WESTERCISMS and FURTHER EAST-WESTERCISMS (two excellent double disc collections on Law & Auder Records - not all Indian influenced, it also has a lot of middle Eastern flava, but still great) Greg

- Anokha, The Sound Of the Asian Underground - Whether it's just INDIAN or not I'm not sure, but it's at least something asian. A really really brilliant piece of work, spanning from d&b to ambient, Music for Adverts meets Plug meets Ofra Haza kind of thing. It's a compilation, some tracks with singing, some without, released on ISLAND (or was it their QUANGO sublabel?) I think, in 1996. Pick it up, you won't regret it.
