Its an Italian bootleg from about 3 years back credited to "The Original Samplers" and being compirsed of a bunch of mix records from the mid-Eighties - I got mine through Ninja at an extortionate price (about £20). My suspicions is that this is a bootleg made by Ninja Tunes. Most of it should be pretty easy to track down on vinyl: 1. DOUBLE DEE AND STEINSKI Lesson One The Payoff Mix 2. DOUBLE DEE AND STEINSKI Lesson Two The James Brown Mix 3. DOUBLE DEE AND STEINSKI Lesson Three The History Of Hip Hop 4. STEINSKI AND THE MASS MEDIA The Motorcade Sped On 5. STEINSKI AND THE MASS MEDIA Its Up To You (Television Mix) 6. Fusion Beats 7. BIG APPLE PRODUCTIONS Genius At Work 8. TD Feelin James 9. COLDCUT Say Kids (What Time Is It?) 10.COLDCUT Beats and Pieces The three Lessons have been bootlegged to death; my vinyl copy is credited "The History of Hip Hop" by DD&S, but it would surprise me if this isn't still in print. Motorcade was released on a free 7" with NME, and Sister Ray Records in London had 3 copies about a fortnight or so ago at ~£3 (flipside is by Sonic Youth so that is how it is filed!?!) Its Up To You was released by Ninja and may still be in print. Fusion Beats is a mix up of James Brown type break beats that was a pretty limited bootleg mix (of UK origin?) (Never ever saw this one). Genius At Work is a pretty clever mishmash of soundbites that sounds like it was made primarily using a tape recorder and pause button. TD Feelin James A pretty stunning mix of breakbeats. It'd be hard to find this one, but you can get "Gordy's Groove" by Fresh Gordon from Dusty Grooves in America, which I believe is the same track (I think the instrumental is called "Feelin James") Say Kids Bit of a classic, I'd say. It was released on several occassions - I have it on the flip of "Find A Way" with all the bonus beat segments. Beats and Pieces I've seen this one around quite a bit, which isn't surprising as it did pretty well and was a minor chart hit. Harder to find would be the original "Greedy G" version which was very rare (I think MB and CC sold it out the back of a car...) There's quite a bit that could have made this up to a full 74 minutes (for example, Coldcut's James Brown Mix) but its still great stuff. i have it on the autumn leaves CD single, which they had about 8 billion copies of at tower outlet a while ago ($0.59 each! get two, they're small!) said CD single also has "that greedy beat" although both are unlisted...

you can get this on the coldcut "what's that noise" album which was released in the US on tommy boy, so is now filling used bins across the nation. the uk release of what's that noise has a few different tracks, btw. (although they both have "beats and pieces"). -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Plan: Eat right, exercise regularly, die anyway.
