found some exciting news on the astralwerks website that i though might be of interest to listmembers: Wagon Christ is one of the projects by UK electronic wunderkid Luke Vibert. His first projects as Wagon Christ on the now-defunct UK label Rising High gained him acclaim as one of the more innovative electronic artists in the early 90's alongside Aphex Twin, µ-Ziq, and Autechre.with his unique combination of ambient sounds, jazz, and manipulated beats. He has recorded under a variety of other pseudonyms for several labels including Rephlex (as Vibert/Simmonds), Blue Planet (as Plug, licensed to Nothing Records in the US), and Mo' Wax (under his own name). A first EP, The Power of Love, will be released in June on Astralwerks UK. It will feature one LP track and 4 non-lp tracks exclusive to this EP. June will see a Luke Vibert remix of Pitchshifter's "Genius" on the AMP2 collection In late July/early August a second single will be released with one album track and two non-LP tracks. The album, entitled Tally Ho!, siphons influences as wide as disco, hip-hop, early breakbeat/rave, drum & bass, and jazz into Wagon Christ's own sieve and comes out with something truly special and different. This is expected to be released at the end of August, beginning of September. Other notable upcoming astralwerks releases: - May 5: µ-Ziq - Brace Yourself ep (Astralwerks) - May 19: Q Burns Abstract Message - Oeuvre (Astralwerks) a collection of his early singles - June 2: Wagon Christ - Power of Love ep (Astralwerks) - July 28: OWL: Remixed Low (Vernon Yard) a collection of remixes of Low by Neotropic, Porter Ricks, Thomas Koner, Jimmy Somerville, and Tranquility Bass - August 25: Photek - Form and Function (Astralwerks) the 6 early singles, remixes of all of those tracks by Doc Scott, J Majik, Photek, Peshay, Grooverider, and Digital; plus 2 new Photek tracks - TBA: Source Direct (Astralwerks) (debut full-length album) - TBA: Spacetime Continuum - Double Fine Zone (Astralwerks) (full-length album) - TBA: Q Burns Abstract Message - Feng Shui (Astralwerks) (debut full-length album) BTW: Does anybody know anything about the aforementioned OWL release? I'm not familiar with OWL but the release sounds interesting. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

The band is Low, actually. OWL seems to be the title of the release. I'm not too familiar with Low, but from what I know, they're sort of post-rock-ish. I've heard comparisons to Codeine which may or may not be valid. Greg

Right, the band is Low.. I've got one of their records, 'The Curtain Hits the Cast'. I picked it up after hearing their name mentioned in one of the 'ambient guitar' threads on the ambient list. I was initially expecting a shoegazer(esque, at least)-type thing, but on this release the sound is ambient /acoustic/ guitar. The songs are almost entirely slow, many times beatless pieces of floating acoustic guitar and half-spoken vocals. Some of the tracks do build on the elements to add minimal rhythm (the picture of a lone snare drum on the cover of the album sums up their approach). It's actually quite good- well done guitar/vocal music with ambient(esque, at least) production. It seems that their other releases are probably not as sparse.. I seem to recall their earlier material compared to Slowdive's last couple of releases. At any rate, the forthcoming remix project looks very interesting. A great surprise.. thanks for the info, Lance. Brad Shelton bshelton@cte.net
