I do believe its a live vocal from Finlay Quaye, he released the track as 'sunday shining' which was a bit of a hit here, and now annoys me greatly. can anyone offer an opinion of Geralds latest releases, I quite enjoyed the Black Secret Technology set. more of the same?

What releases would those be? The last 2 I've seen were a brilliant jungle track on the Foundations comp., and a techno track on the Deepest Shade of Techno comp. Has anyone heard his remix of Tricky (i think, might have been DJ Shadow)? Che

Yeah, Black Secret Tech was surely something not to miss. I tried to order a couple of items from Action Records two weeks ago ("Finley's Remix", "Glok Track / Gerald's Bassline" and "Nazinji") but they were unfortunately out of stock. I also managed to track down the "Peel Sessions" (from 91 ?) while visiting a friend out of town, but I didn't buy that one. Also, can anyone provide the details on the differences between the original Black Secret Technology release and the 1997 reissue ? I've heard a track or two are left out (?) Yes, no only that, but most of the tracks have been remixed/reworked. At first, the reissue does not make as deep an impression as the original material, but on second impression sound wonderful. Here is the tracklisting: Side a: Hekkle and Koch So Many Dreams Alita's Dream Side B: Finley's rainbow The Nile Energy Sude C: Silent Cry Dreaming of You Survival Cybergen Side D: The Reno Cyberjazz Life Unfolds It's Mystery Touch Me regards, sashainboston

I disagree. I bought the reissue when it came out and ended up selling it because it didn't offer me anything over the original. While the sound quality of the reissue is better (but still far from great), "Voodoo Rage" and the unlisted vocal track from the original were cut. VR is a great track, and the unlisted one is crucial. Additionally, "So Many Dreams" on the reissue is the Aquasky remix. I absolutely prefer the original. Same situation with the redone "Life Unfolds Its Mystery." Heck, Gerald even inexplicably added some thunder sounds to the end of "Finley's Rainbow" so even that isn't as good. The two brand-new tracks ("Hekkle and Koch" and "Touch Me") are good tracks but hardly essential. In short, if you're a fan of the reissued version and you haven't heard the original, you don't know what you're missing. This is the most fully realized, complete drum & bass album ever and puts everything by Squarepusher, Plug, etc etc to shame.

'Aquarius Rising' was announced almost two years ago in a cover story in The Wire. It's starting to move into the same category as Derrick May's debut album and MBV's follow-up to 'Loveless.' I have a vague feeling someone at MTV have given me the wrong answer, but then again with all this talk about the differences on the different releases of the album I'd sure like anyone to confirm this suspection. | 'Aquarius Rising' was announced almost two years ago in a cover story in | The Wire. It was remastered for one, bass was sorely lacking on the original. If i remember correctly, there were a couple of extra remixes.

Theres a compilation out of the artists on his Juicebox label. I saw a 12" promo recently with a couple of new tracks, supposedly these are not to be featured on his new album which is due out soon. Sorry for the vague reply, i only scanned the press release briefly .

This is gonna be called Aquarius Rising with some vocals from Lady Miss Kier of Deee-lite. Has been talked about for ages but so far hasn't got released. Other than that, I know nothing. Interesting to hear people rating Black Secret Technology, but I'm afraid I have to say that it's not one of my fave drum and bass releases. There's some interesting tracks, but to my ears the drums are clatterly and all over the place, and even though it was slightly ahead of it's time there's no excuse for not making the drums rip - see 4 Hero's Parallel Universe for a better early drum and bass LP. Speaking of which, someone game me a tracklisting for the new 4 Hero LP to be released on Talkin' Loud in the UK (no US domestic release planned tho). The album is called "Two Pages" and the tracklisting is... 1. Loveless 2. Golden Age of Life 3. Planetaria 4. 3rd Stream 5, Escape That 6. Cosmic Tree 7. Spirits in Transit 8. World's End 9. Starchasers 10. Wishful Thinking 11. Universal Love 12. We Who Are Not of Others 13. Humans 14. In the Shadows 15. Mathematical Probability 16. The Greys 17. Pegasus 51 18. 3 005 19. Worm Holes 20. Dauntless Sounds like a long one, possibly 2 CDs worth... I've borrowed the new version from a friend, plan to load it into my Mac & A/B it with the original to tell the differences, then burn the alternate tracks on a CD w/ 28 Gun Bad Boy (so I can keep the original in a safe place, I doubt I'll ever see another copy). Full report by the end of the week. I've got the "So Many Dreams" CDS, and have to say I prefer the original to the remixes. On Wed, 3 Jun 1998, lwtcdi wrote:

I think Gerald's drum programming has always been excellent. He gets some amazing textures from his rhythms on both BST & 28 Gun Bad Boy (the total mindfuck jungle album - it gets better every time I listen to it, and it rated as a great album the first time I heard it. Hard to believe it's from '92). 4 Hero, at least on Parallel Universe, tends to be a little more Catholic in their drum programming to maintain their dancefloor cred. I'm glad they strayed from that a bit w/ Jacob's Optical Stairway. But, if you want some really ripping tracks, try out their "Paranormal In 4 Forms" (MacroDubInfection), or the JOS remix of System 7 on the Foundations comp.

Thanks for the info. Anyone care to comment on the "Jacob's Story" EP that came out on R&S about a year ago? I've been meaning to buy it for too long. Che

I agree with the 'textures' bit of that, but that's precisely why I'm not into it that much. Making textures from your beats is fine, but for me textures and beats are two different things, and the beats on this LP just aren't the way I like them to be in drum and bass. They don't move me in any way, and the production sounds 'off' to me, cluttered and messy. It's exactly the opposite of what I was expecting when I bought it, which was some serious rhythm. Really it is an attempt to make a challenging album with a sound on the edges of drum and bass and aimed at the more experimental and listening end of the market. That's not to say I'm not open to other interpretations of the typical drum and bass sound, but so far I haven't heard any that really stand on their own, and at the time "Black Secret Technology" came out it wasn't what I was after I all. Even now I still find it hard to see what the real fuss was/is about.

Well, I can't comment on this release as I don't own it, but I have heard this is his 'proper' jungle album and I would love to hear it just to see how it compares to "Black Secret Technology". It would give me a better idea of whether the sound on BST was a concious decision to change the way beats were used in hardcore/drum and bass or whether Gerald just couldn't ever cut it much beats wise. Not that it really matters, I still don't care for BST much either way, but it'd certainly be interesting to make that comparison.
quoted 2 lines 4 Hero, at least on Parallel Universe, tends to be a little more Catholic> 4 Hero, at least on Parallel Universe, tends to be a little more Catholic > in their drum programming to maintain their dancefloor cred.
I dunno. I find it hard to see how there was anything Catholic about the breaks on that LP at the time it came out. It might sound quite traditional now, but at the time there wasn't very much like it around, and it certainly turned my head around to possibilities using breakbeats in music. Almost anything that avoided the dreaded 4/4 beat seemed like a godsend. Well, that's not strictly true, there were still shit and good records on both sides, but boy did that 4/4 start to get tedious.

I have this on cassette somewhere, but I forget what it sounds like. Don't remember it being partcularly devastating beat-wise, but I may stand corrected if I ever find it in all these cassettes!

Yeah, I didn't hear much about this one either. Never picked it up myself, so I can't say. Wasn't it one new track and a couple of remixes, or something like that. Didn't justify the cost for me, but then I never heard the new track, it might be a classic. Seemed to get overlooked at the time for some odd reason. Anyone got the lowdown?
