Yeah, but it wasn't called IDM back then, SO THERE! ;) Seriously, though, which releases from that bygone era (pre-little-fluffy-clouds) would you recommend most? I don't think there's been a discussion like this on the list for a while, so I'm starting one up again. Audience participation is strongly encouraged. Just try to place an emphasis on stuff I can actually FIND nowadays without having to take out a loan. You can respond privately if you want, but I imagine there are a lot of other people out there who would love to have been into the scene back then, only they had not yet reached the age of reason. So, for them, please post to the list. Do it for the children.

Electric Cafe - Kraftwerk (also, the Tour de France 12"...impossible to get, sorry) Eno is a given. Technodon - YMO ...a title I seldom see discussed here and while a 1993 release and not easy to find, I find completely BRILLIANT. More along the lines of your query would be the earlier YMO releases. LOTS of the Bill Nelson stuff...from late Be-Bop Deluxe to Red Noise to his volumes of solo work. Tin Drum- Japan Geez...that whole NY electro scene with Afrika Bambaata, John Robie and a cast of thousands ("One More Shot" !) ....I'm having difficulty with just how far back I'm supposed to go here...or just what parameters to set up as I wander through the backroads of my (considerably aged) memory. I'm restraining myself from mentioning things I consider seminal like James Brown or Ein. Neubauten and all of the early industrial stuff 'cuz I don't hink that's what you want. I think I'll wait for this to develop if ( it does) before I start to ramble. I was working in music retail in the late 70s-early 80s, so I can bore you all to death with this kind of crap. jeff -- dancing/about/architecture "...with wandering steps and slow..." ICQ 904008

Also, Tangerine Dream is probably an essential pre-IDM prototype band that was around in the Kraftwerk days. -- Mr. Tangent "insert random quoted text here, for your reading pleasure"

since no one mentioned these yet: emanuel gotsching: e2-e4... let me just put it this way: it will blow you away. minimal idm, something like orbital vs lego feet... one long track which constantly changes and evolves... beautiful. (from 1981) klaus schulze: black dance... fucking great. this is trance from the 70s w/ spacey melodies on top... also way ahead of its time... there is another klaus schulze track called 'totem', which is brilliant (very autechre like pulsating/changing beats) but i don't know the album which it originaly appears on... i hear its on the silver collection...? anyone have info on this...? edgar froese: aqua... no beats on this one... but it's amazing... kicks the shit out of aphex as far as 'sonic invention' is concrened... weird oscillating synths, which sometimes fall into 'organic' rhythyms meshed with occasional melodies... great trip music.. ;-) (from 1972) peace.... :spacecake:

if you like these then you will love Steve Hillage's "Rainbow Dome Music" (still in print via Caroline). nothing but arpeggiating synths and some gliss guitar lines for 40 minutes. "back side of the moon" by the orb (with hillage!) is basically r.d.m. with a drum beat added. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Plan: Eat right, exercise regularly, die anyway.

i dont mean to be confrontational BUT IMO..... I love e2-34, and i have heard and liked plenty of Schulze and Froese, and i sincerely *detest* 'rainbow dome music', i use it as a benchmark for extremely wanky hippy nonsense, gong, system 7 , teapots BLAH! However i do really enjoy Terry Riley 'Rainbow in curved air' which many people could also describe as extremely wanky hippy nonsense, ...which it basically is,, but lush with it. The fact that Rileys other Meisterwerks such as Poppy Nogood, In C and Persian Surgery dervishes show a extremely broad sense of styles (while remaining recognisably Riley), In C was obviously a big influence on Steve Reich, who took the concept and made it *sing*. And Poppy nogood is a pretty good benchmark for todays 'Dark' ambient, Riley used to jam this piece all night, continuously looping his improvised Organ and Saxophone to marvellous results. I suggest Terry Riley as a much more rewarding and non-wiggy alternative to R.D.M. and Hillage in general. Steve

Oh go away :-))))) Gong's Angel's Egg was utter bliss at the time, for its time - flying teapoints, pothead pixies, Daevid (uh?) Allen and all. However, I misguidedly purchased Gong's Camembert Electrique recently, and cannot get beyond 5 minutes into it and would happily proclaim it utter crap (for the late 90's). On the old music tip, though - Tangerine Dream's Alpha Centauri was pretty dreamy and spacey. And nobody mentioned the Faust Tapes. Oh, let me go and drag out some Jethro Tull now ... bye! I think i have an un-naturally strong aversion to Steve Hillage. Steve
