'84 from "microphonies" and single. i remember the number of times these apparently grim-faced dadaists namechecked james brown, motown and northern soul as being big influences and then produced their own v. puzzling version of it w/ "voice of america" (" ... there will be no dancing, ..."). the skewed funk that appeared on "red mecca" and contemporary singles ("sluggin' fer jesus" and "gut level") gave more of a clue, but was lovingly buried in industrial noise and distorted tape samples. its a pity that most of the industrial bands that followed took the noise end and replaced the funk w/ hamfisted teutonic stomping. -martin

Refer to the beat structure of *most* early Cabs and a huge amount of R Kirk solo material...and Cabaret Voltaire's early eighties ( 83' ? 84 ' ? ) tune, " James Brown". James Brown was also, as mentioned in this thread and others ad infinatum, *the* model for funk rhytmn samples ( duh....."funky drummer"...sorry for being so obvious). Many of the sample artists often mentioned on this list were doodling with JB horns and mid 70s JB material for *years* before they got tired of it and moved on. Also I must agree with someone's recent post that JB does have a machine like grace. Though the *funk* is definitely a *human* vibe ( and should stay that way) it also comes through with so many of the machine music maestros...Kraftwerk was mentioned in this thread. Said Bambaata of Kraftwerk ( paraphrasing here ) " they were the only white people in the world who understood James Brown " Peter np: HULA - 1,000 hours ( now *there's* some industrial goes proto- idm influence for 'ya ) Any ambient heads into *this* atypical Hula double LP? WOW. Some slept on stuff here. I was always suprised that they never made it, especially this amazing LP. ******************************************************** bpm0@interport.net, <also: peter@asphodel.com> Peter Becker - Distribution Manager/ DJ Pool / Mail Order/ Demo Tape Filter Asphodel - PO Box 51, Chelsea Station, NY NY 10113 Ph: (212) 604-9362, FAX: (212)604-0783 http://www.asphodel.com *********************************************************
