Hi. I'm mildly surprised that no one has mentioned that Neotropic's "15 levels of magnification" is out on Ninja Tune. It's by Riz Maslen - and it's a strong album. Detailed review later. For now - just buy. This promo I like very much. PCF P.S. Sorry, just saw the release date - mid August. But I'll review it before that. I do agree. Great album. NTone is already miles better than Ninja Tunes...:-) Thaddi

Just Picked up the Neotropic "Laudrophonic" 12" (ntone 18). A four track EP from Riz aka Small Fish with Spine. I'd heard a few cuts under this moniker on various comps, and its always more dark and whooshy than the Small Fish stuff. The tracks are _Laudry 1-4_ and the packaging is in that vein as well. The first cuts is very dark. A mixture of wierd industial clanks used as percussion. Track 2 is a little faster and more frenetic but still scary as heck. Track 3 is more of the same industrial ambient hip hop. The real gem is the final track a nice creepy dark breakbeat number with the same evil groove as the cut on the Earthrise ntone comp (name eludes me). Aside from track 4 its a bit too scattered for me. One minute there's a beat then its gone. The samples at time seem out of place. 6/10 good but not great Anyone care to contrast this with the album as I'm unsure whether I need 2 more lps like this. I love the first Small Fish 12" so I'm thinking about buying "15 levels" or whatever its called. -- Mark Bowen mb@gettins.bche.uic.edu

I've had the exact same experience with this release. Riz definitely has her own flava, and some of the stylings and melodies are cool, but it doesn't really do anything for me. Repeat listenings might be the key here. GD

I talked to her after the show and asked her when the new material was coming out and she said around september. She also told me that her album under the alias small fish with spine was very similar but it was more organic in nature. The small fish with spine album should be available through oxygen music in new york. -daniel
