I didn't go, simply because I didn't hear about it until it was already over. I'm on the Digest and the Digest with Allan's message arrived the day after. He told me that he'd just gotten back from WMC in Miami and hadn't really had a chance to get the word out. I was at the last Public Space event, which had Dimitry (Pthalo), Danny (Low Res) and John Tejada playing live with Joe & Allan DJ'ing. There were about 50 people there that night, I think. The non-standard ("experimental", Detroit, BC/CR-influenced, etc.) scene here in L.A. *is* fairly small, but that's also due to lack of information flow. If something doesn't show up on the SoCal-Raves calendar, or isn't sent out to the Green Galactic (Public Space) snail mail list, etc. etc., then it's hard to find out about. On the contrary, the "big names" tend to pull the people out of the woodwork; Autechre at The Troubador was rammed to the gills. And the building (one of several in use simultaenously) where RDJ played last September was pretty jam-packed during his set.

Not from the IDM camp, I suspect. (-: I'd love to see Not Breathing, but there was no way I was gonna pay all that money just to see him without Scorn. (I was a huge Neubauten fan back in the day, but I kinda doubt I'd be into FM Einheit now, and the less said about Pigface the better.) If you want to see turnout, go to Neverland (with Neil Landstrumm, John Selway from the 313 list, and others) next weekend or to the Ninja Tune event at The Troubador on April 5th. np: Moodymann "Silent Introduction" - Greg P.S. Welcome back Jon! P.P.S. Yes Irene you're right about the Julia Set ...

Yeah, that's understandable. Lumpy Gravy does have a web site, though, which lists upcoming shows. Here's the URL: http://www.lumpy-gravy.com Hopefully, they'll have similar stuff in the near future. Right now they only have event info for the rest of this month and nothing looks to promising.

I wish I would have made that event, but I wasn't living here last Sept. unfortunately. :(

I just figured with labels such as Plug Research and Isophlux so close that the scene would be further developed, I guess. Information flow is vital, though, as you mentioned. Maybe we should start some sort of web page for posting IDM type events in the LA area. I'd be willing to do it and if we had a small collective of people we could easily keep the page updated with current info. Just a thought. Let me know if anyone is up for this.

Yeah, I drove to LA from Arizona to see that one. Perfect example about getting the word out. I bet lots of people present at that event lived out of the LA area and/or out of state.

Scorn. Well, it seems from the posts here that a few made it at least. Not Breathing collaborated with Mark Spybey on stage to create the best moments of the night, as already noted. However, Phylr and FM Einheit had some good moments also. Phylr even had a live drummer to add another element to the tracks. I do wish Scorn made it, though. However, under the circumstances I completely understand his position.

I liked the fact that FM Einheit had some sort of metal device on stage that he stroked to give a small element of Einstuzende Neubauten in the set. Overall the sound was a bizarre take on pop music with a female vocalist and his interpretaion of "songs". Despite the 10 people on stage, Pigface left me underwhelmed -- so much so that I left mid-way through their set to visit Aron's records since it was in the neighborhood and that cheered me up! Any IDMers ever in LA should check out Aron's -- they're the only store around that I've seen to regularly carry Rather Interesting CDs... plus they have lots of other goodies.

I'll probably pass on the Neverland rave (thanks for the heads up though), but I can't wait to see Neotropic, Chocolate Weasel and DJ Vadim in action!
