Jean-Jacqus Perrey...a life of many adventures.
Jean-Jacques Perrey was born in a little village in northern france in 1920.
After receiving an accordion as a christmas gift at tha age of four, he taught
himself to learn piano by ear.
A little over decade later, studying medicine in paris, Perrey met George
Jenny, inventor of the ondioline.
Quitting medical school perrey travelled through europe demonstrating this
keyboard ancestor to the modern synthesiser.
In 1956, performing on ondioline, Perrey together with guitarist Django
Reinhardt, accompanied the famous french singer composer Charles Trenet.
The song " Sul of Poets" became an international hit.
The succes of the ondioline sounds drew Jean Cocteau's attention, who advises
Perrey" try to become well known across the ocean: "you have a mission on this
earth, because you were born to create".
Through Cocteau,Edith Piaf organised a trans atlantic crossing on Perrey's
behalf.
At the age of 30 Perrey relocated to New York, sponsored by Carroll Bratman
who built for him an experimental laboratory and recording studio. here Perrey
invented " a new process for generating crazy rhythms with sequences and
loops" utilising the environnemental sounds of musique concrete.with scissors,
splicing tape and tape recorders, he spent weeks piecing together a uniquely
comic take on the future.
Perrey literraly devised sampling strategies before the design of sampling
technology.
In 1962 Perrey performed atmospheric sounds for the theatre version of Ray
Bradbury's " Dandelion White" presented at New York's Lincoln Center.
In 1963 walt disney met Perrey and showed considerable interests in his method
of working.
On the east coast Perrey performed the ondioline with the Dick Schory
oOchestra in Chicago's Symphony Hall.
Befriending Robert Moog, he became one of the first moog musicians, creating "
Far Out Electronic Entertainment".
In 1965 Perrey met Gershon Kingsley, a former accomplice to experimentals John
Cage.
together, using an ondioline and perrey's loops, they created two albums for
the vanguard recording company : " The in sound from way out" in 1966.
followed in 1967 by " Kaleidoscopic Vibrations " which drew upon the strenghts
of the moog synthesiser.
Perrey and Kingsley collaborated on sound design for radio and television
advertising including electronic jingles for clark candy bars, volkswagen,
contac, hush puppies, Almond Clusters and qQ-Tips.
In 1966 esso adopted " Visa to the Stars " for their campaign theme, and in
1968 Perrey received a Cleo aAard for an extremely wild soundtrack to
no-call's commercials.
in 1972 disney company selected " Baroque Hoedown " as the opening theme for
their show, " mainstream electrical parade" presented in disneyland france,
japan and usa( it ran until 1997).
On the east coast Perrey performed the ondioline with the dick schory

with the amazing new electronic pop sound ( Vanguard, 1969) and " Moog
Indigo"( Vanguard 1970) Perrey proved that he had become the funkiest man on
the moog, producing some of his finest work, including a second international
hit " Passport to the future " co-written with Andy Badale ( today known as
Agelo Badalamente). having contributed sound effects to Stanley Kubrick's epic
film of Arthur C. Clarke's 2001) a space odyssey .
Perrey returned to france, recording another seven albums, composing for
television, scoring for ballet and continuing medical research into "
Therapeutic Sounds for Insomniacs".
Now three decades after their original release, all four of perrey's Vanguard
albums are available on CD.
The explosive astro-funk of " E.V.A." has become the most sampled tracks of
the 1990s.
adopted by lucozade as the soundtrack to their " Full Circle" tv and cinema
ads campaign in summer 1996 and summer 1997, it has been remixed by Norman
Cook, and covered by Sure is Pure.
In collaboration with Versailles duo Nicholas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel,
the Perrey/air creation " cosmic bird " was released on " i love source lab 3
( source lp's, france 1997).
air's debut album " moon safari" ( set for release in january 1998) features "
remember " a track whose lyrics are co-signrd with perrey.
today, Jean Jacques is preparing to return to america, to undertake a
lecture-demonstration tour of universities, prior to recording new material
with the creative team who designed " moon indigo " lp in 1970.
At home in vichy, central france, he is patiently transferring magnetic tape
to zip drive, digitising his live's archive of far out field recordings and
musique concrete.
" Eklectronics Vintage 97", a collaborative album with David Chazam is
released next month as a limited audiophile edition. with a young generation
beginning to discover the exotic moods and deliciously weird breaks of Jean
Jacques Perrey, another chapter in this life of many adventures, is about to
begin.
