Tower Records, at least in California, is very receptive to independent stuff -- I know that the ICU4 Hip Hop compilation will be in Tower Records, and that's pretty much a no LC code, no UPC, guy working out of his trunk operation.

I saw three shrink-wrapped copies of SAW II brown vinyl at Tower last week, alongside dozens of hard to find UK and Detroit techno records! They're not doing too badly I reckon. -- <---HEATsink---? np: sounds of the Yellow DJ

i don't think that's really the point. i'd say this remark:

is what triggered this whole thing. heh.. "today's deepest, most true-to-the-scene underground sound can be your's for only 9.95 at a food mart near you." oh boy.. it reminds me of this guy that was on wkdu the other night, "the great deity dah." his thing was taking hip-hop back to its roots, and how hip-hop these days in the US is all about money and has nothnig to do with what people are saying or doing anymore. he was also about appearing very educated and well-read and used lots of unnecessarily big words (correctly though). but anyway, he went into this 10-minute freestyle about being true to yourself and true to the scene and true to this and that, and then right in the middle he started talking about where to get his new record and who produced it and how to contact him (via email, voice mail, web) and his production group and parties they're doing and where they're going to be and how much money they cost and he goes "let me rePEAT" and he repeats all that stuff again (still freestyling mind you, it was really funny and stupid). plus, they played an old track of his and a track from the new record and he broke in on the mic over BOTH and repeated the same information about where to get his stuff and all the names that appear on it and blah blah blah.. it's just funny when people get things mixed up. but it's funny in a sad way. -eric wasn't writing from an i-am-underground persepctive btw, cause i'm not. :) --- eric sherman szale@doubtful.com doubtful productions www.doubtful.com wkdu 91.7fm philadelphia transmitting ambient/idm thursdays midnight-6am

well i was making my assumption on my local Tower Records in birmingham which is dire. Like Virgin without even the few good releases they get in the megastores. Steve

DEVELOPMENT RECORDS RELEASE #DEV12001 "SOON TO BE NATIONALLY DISTRIBUTED...THIS IS THE TRUE UNDERGROUND..." (available by mail order (MC/VISA) @ sndwrks@best.com (approx. $8 incl.s&h) phone 415 487-3980) (available for $6 @ open mind records, sf, ca / ameoba records, sf,ca / soundworks, sf, ca tower records, market street, sf, ca / housewares, sf, ca) (Can't find it? call 415 551 0951 for information!!) Nationally distributed can mean friends of the label all over the country are marketing consignments and sales to their local record stores. Many stores dig supporting the underground scene and buy it up front - many take consignments.(like TOWER). SO, apologies to all those disturbed by this misappropriation of vocabulary... (Fortunately this wasn't the only feedback we received. The support from labels, DJ's, promoters, and people who want to get involved is appreciated and we look forward to more positive exchanges of ideas in the future. We WILL be in touch. IN FACT - anyone know of a local store near them interested in domestic underground vinyl - need a promo? Can you say NATIONALLY DISTRIBUTED? Let us know...PEACE!) Support the underground - spread POSITIVE vibes - KEEP IT REAL!
