hey -- I like AOW for precisely this reason! Every track starts very innocously, until very subtly the beats get more distorted, sounds like machines continually speeding up + breaking down. With recent Squarepusher, even the frenzied stuff on Big Loada you don't get anywhere near the sense of catastrophe. It takes a few listens to realize AOW has an entirely different rationale, simultaneously more subtle, anti-musical and disturbing. Although I was underwhelmed at first this one *really* grew on me! So who else does stuff strictly in this vein? Have any of the other bovinyl artists made it to CD? I heard of a compilation called "spunk jazz" but I have yet to see it anywhere (reviews anyone?) <<< yes the animals on wheels is a strange beast. a lot of smooth sounds and melodies at the top, which seems to put some people off, and bassy distortion and truly chaotic breaks, in a smash everything up and be damned, rather than complex jazz structure ala squarepusher. which can also put off everyone else. i myself like the mixture of the two, so its fine by me. "spunk jazz" (on ill) is a fine release well worth checking out, get the cd as aow have 2 tracks on that versh, one is missing from the vinyl, though the cd-only trak "f.y.a" has had a couple of good slaggings on the list, and will probably drive you mad at first. a kind of harder, darker and more violent cd which has had me in mind of "spunk jazz", is "industrialsamplecoregouchebeat" by trash (various no future) which is just out and pretty easily available on mille plateaux. vinylwise, "avit" 12" by spymania allstars on spymania, is a must. and i cannot begin to do justice to the madness that is "the death of cool pt 1" 2lp on noodles. groovy jazz, distorto techno played by flipper, stomping righteous floor shakers, mad scratching, clicky percussion, beautiful simple ambience, dub country+western and cola fuelled belching are all present and more. and 4 lock grooves, including the belching. pt 2 is being compiled and i can't wait. i already posted a full long review of "spunk jazz" so i'll fwd that off-list. oh and paddington breaks "smart but casual" 12" on ill should have a proper release today (according to an advert in jockey slut). i hear this is excellent too. -martin

wasn't there also a Boards of Canada remix in the works?? BoC drill n' bass? now that would sound cool. as for the bubbah's tum track, i'd much rather see a remix 12" of many of the other tracks from spunk. The tracks by Milky Boy, Come On Feel The Nothing (Hardy Wafta), Value Ape (Martin Wafta), and Hoarse Opera ('sup steve), were the real standout tracks... "dirty great maybel" started off nice but it made my ears hurt after the "huffing glue" sample (which, btw, is ultra keen). Maybe I'm just too weak. oh yeah, the mould track on there also makes me ears bleed ill discography, afaik: ill001 Spunk Jazz LP/CD ill00? Spunk Jazz Sampler 10" (split Paddington Breaks/AoW) ill002 African Nightflight: Make Up Your Mind ill003 Conemelt: Rockers Ruin ill004 Conemelt: 24 Karat Conemelt LP ill005 ???? ill006 Paddington Breaks: Daytime TV ill007 Bubbah's Tum: Dirty Great Maybel (Remixes) [to be released.] ...ill005?? might this be the other Paddy Breaks you mentioned? and why haven't we heard anything from spymania in so long?! and for the record, designs and mistakes is weak. very weak. the only bovinyl artist i respect is milky boy, his stuff on trash is excellent but the avantgardism track sux.. what has he put out on bovinyl (i know he runs the label) and if i ever hear anything like cheesy keys again... err.. let's just hope we don't! mute santa/erantmundas north.pole.http://members.xoom.com/multsanta/ _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Ha, I thought that 12" was super funny. rather pointless, but funny none-the-less. As for Milky Boy, would someone please provide other works by him? His tracks on _Trash_ were easily stand-outs, especially "kates rush". (...And why all the comparisons of _Trash_ and _Spunk Jazz_ anyway? imo _Trash_ is easily superior, with much more of a sense-of-humour and noise about it. More varied also.) np::Ground Zero--_Consume Red_...which is making it VERY hard to concentrate on the paper I'm attempting to type. --- Peace Hugs and Unity Jason J. Tar W. W. J. D?
