Portland, Oregon: What are the Frequency shows? ----------------------------- - 21 weeks of shows - 25 live electronic music projects - all genres of dance & experimental - 10 DJ's - All shows have been _FREE_ The Frequency series was born from the ashes of the regular "Monte Carlo" nights at the Monte Carlo club on 11th and Belmont, which was started by OMCO & Jesse James. Frequency was equally inspired by the previous year of monthly Hypnotica experimental series shows. The idea behind the shows is to spotlight experimentation in electronic music and allow dj's and programmers to perform *without* the normal restrictions on their performance that they would likely have in a rock club or rave event. This is done best by removing money from the equation of the promoter/performer/audience, so the shows are free to attend (age 21 & over, though). ;-( (It is unfortunate that the space is not all-ages, but there is little motivation for anyone to host such an event publickly otherwise) In keeping with the general theme of the series, there are very unusual flyers for the 21 weeks' shows. They are hand-made, screen-printed on various papers (blueprints, maps, newsprint, rock-show-flyers) from the paper-trash from the downtown dumpsters. Also, because the music is not the standard rave FOTF (four on the floor), made all of the flyers have 6 edges, rather than the typical 4; based on a hexagonal grid and images (found in some amateurish, sci-fi RPGame books). Some are folded or layered or pop-ups, and the final flyer will be the ultimate recycling suprise. Here are the remaining shows and their dates. The location follows... ======================================================================= FREQUENCY 17 (tonight!) I am organizing a show that O.S.T.(Chris Douglas) (aka Rook Valade) is playing here in Portland, Oregon, and was wondering if anyone else is interested in booking him for either dj'ing or performing in Seattle or Portland on the weekend of March 13-15. He is quite flexible, schedule-wise and would be reachable through me (email/phone) during the week of Mar 9-16 (if an openning came up last minute). I offered to help Chris find some paying gigs while he was going to be in the area. I posted a little about Chris' releases in the message below, and I can arrange gigs for him then or get you in contact with him in SF. My personal impression of Chris' music is that he basically about to become really big in the experimental scene (Aphex Twin, Freeform, Paradinas/muziq, etc) when his Worm Interface EP hits the market. ok, i've been trying to find some more stuff by this OST guy... all i have is the Disco Moonlight track and the emit ecaps remix, and it's all good... but i know there's more. There's the Rook Villard release on plug research. and i read a review of an OST disc on some really obscure label at the Urban Sounds site. i read in urb (i think) about a slab he released that plays from the inside out, and the contribution to the Diskono compilation. arrgh anyone have a discography. why can i not find any of this material?!???! and pointers??

the only place i've come across the qilopothic release (reviewed at urbansounds) is at open mind music in san francisco. the story behind the label is that it was made by a sketchy raver type who didn't have it together distribution-wise, so it's entirely possible that all of the copies are somewhere in s.f., waiting to be bought. i'd call open mind and see if they're mailorder-capable. if this doesn't work, email me. i have never seen the switch release.

I'll ask him about his EP, since you are asking. Seems like Eric Hill or SCooper would know him down in SF maybe. I only know that Ian of the SF Spaz crew and my friend Pasta have test-pressings from a few years ago. These guys are probably all on IDM and should be able to tell you about what is up.
