Caught Cajmere DJ-ing in his Green Velvet guise at Voodoo, Liverpool this
weekend. If you're sick of Mills copycats spinning 'The Bells' ad infinitum
(one of the most inspiring, exhilerating tracks I know when used well ie.
by Jeff Mills himself and, well, a few others, but absolutely hammered into
the ground round these parts these days) then give yourself a treat and
see/hear Green Velvet do his stuff if you get the chance.
Hard, dark, spooky house (haunted house?) and sinuous funky techno
supremely mixed - the bpm count was lower than Voodoo's used to, but the
groove was just immense. Loads of his own tracks in there too. There wasn't
a dry armpit in the house. He was giving records away to the trainspotters
and was sooo cool throughout, but the grin that spread across his face when
Liverpool finally exploded at the evening's end and gave him the screams
and cheers he deserved was great to see.
He seems to be doing the rounds in the UK at the moment - don't waste yer
chance.
