As I do laundry, I thought it might be nice to write up some
reviews of discs I've enjoyed lately. Some of these may be
old, but they are new to me, or just things which I feel are
worth checking out...
artist : biosphere
title : substrata
label : thirsty ear
catalouge : thi 66033.2
summary : 11 tracks of dark ambient melodic strangeness
I have to say, I hate to use the word "ambient" to describe
anything with as much depth as this. Maybe to me the word
ambient has taken on a slightly derogatory meaning. But the
rich atmospherics of this disc are just that - layers upon
layers of ambient sound, merging into a pallate which ranges
from cheezy lounge (times when i know you'll be sad) to deeply
creepy (the things i tell you).
This is not a beat-oriented disc, but unlike some, it maintains
wonderful cohesiveness. While surrounding, one never feels that
the music loses its focus.
I can't list the huge numbers of types of sounds and samples used
here, as I'm not even sure I could identify all of them. This CD
is excellent listening music.
One word of caution : don't try to sleep to it. You will continually
think people are trying to break into your house. Or maybe that's
just me.
