Just wanted to let you all know about a new service we recently launched that lets people make their own custom CD compilations. At http://www.cductive.com, you can listen to Real Audio samples of any of the titles in our licensed catalog, choose the tracks you like, and personalize your cover. We manufacture the CD and deliver it to you by mail. We’re focused entirely on dance/electronic music and we’re working with some excellent labels: Transmat, Communique, Suburban Base, Pussyfoot, Flex, Plastic City, Asphodel, Crammed Discs, Swim, and Ninja Tune, to name a few. A portion of our catalog and partner labels are already on the site. The others will follow shortly. And we’re in the process of signing many more labels. I invite you to check out the site and give me your feedback. Thanks, Tom Ryan CDUCTIVE 285 West Broadway Suite 230 New York, NY 10013 Email: tom@cductive.com or phatnfresh@aol.com

launched... http://www.cductive.com/ Chris sez: Hey, this looks pretty good for starters. IDM peeps should take a look. They're actually starting to get some decent labels and bands to participate and all songs are RA previewable. I'd be interested in other people's opinions of this kind of service, particularly from artists and labels. Do independent labels and small artists stand to lose or gain from this? Also, can anyone tell if their catalog holds anything which is out of print? Or anything which only exists on vinyl through regular retail channels? Strangely, though, as I look through the lists I am torn. I see many tracks in their catalog which I already own. Some of them come from LPs with dozens of crappy songs and one or two gems. In these cases I would almost rather just have it on a custom compilation cd instead of the whole bad album. Yet the whole time I'm thinking about how cool owning real albums is. I'm no collector/trainspotter, but even I have something of a music ownership fetish, even if it is for cds/records with mostly crappy music on them. - Chris Fahey np: approaching menace

This is an excellent idea, while there is nothing at present which i am interested in on their lists, they do seem to have a broad range with some respected labels. Ill certainly point this page out to mike paradinas. As to whether its worth it for small labels.... it all depends on what the terms of the contract are... ive mailed them for information and will make it available to the list when i receive it....From an artist point of view i can see the benefits and disadvantages... obviously youd rather people bought your whole 12"/lp/cd... but then if there is only one track they like then why shouldnt they legally own a quality reproduction of it... id be interested to know if there is a staggering between release of the original vinyl/cd, and the availablity on the cductive lists, i reckon most small labels would want it this way, and if i owned a label i hink id want there to be a period where only the original vinyl/cd was available (maybe 3 months?)... but again that all depends on what royalties they receive. If Ninja Tune can afford to offer the service then im sure Rephlex and Warp could... it would be interesting to see if Warp would go in for this sort of thing... they seem to love the idea and design of 'Warp-Product' too much to let someone market their stuff for them.
