Hello,
It is, and it isnt, if you know what I mean. I definitely see and
understand the point you are trying to make. Electronics are totally
tied to this music, and therefore you should be able to talk about them
on this list...
The problem arises when the point of the list is to talk about the
music, which to be more clear, is to talk about IDM releases(finished
audio.) Personally, I joined this list to learn more about what is going
on in the IDM neck of the woods. That means that I want to hear about
IDM releases past and present, or artists working in a non-IDM vein that
other IDM'ers find interesting. I want to learn more about music that I
can go to the shop and buy.
I am not a topic Nazi, and I have no problem with getting a bit of noise
along with the signal I tune in for. I do not mind a bit of gear
questions here and there, it keeps the list healthy. The problem is that
this list is geared towards IDM releases, but nobody is talking about
them, everybody is flooding the list with Gear related posts. I have had
double the normal traffic in my mail box for the last two days because
of these "noise" posts about music making.
I understand that some of you are learning something, and that you find
these posts interesting. You are passionate about music, and you are
expressing your opinions and feelings about something you care about. My
problem is that I have already paid my gear list dues, and I do not want
100 messages in my mail box concerning an arguement that I have heard
over and over again since 1996. Others just do not want to hear about
that end of the music, they just want to know what is out this week. If
I want to hear about gear I can join Digital Hell, or Analogue Heaven,
or Movable Parts, Or Electronic_music, or...
There are a million music making mailing lists out there, so it is not
like you cannot get involved in music tech discussion in more
appropriate forums. Please take these discussions elsewhere, so that
they can be explored more fully by listmembers who are really interested
in these topics.
I am not trying to play topic police, I just think everyone would be
happier, and possibly better informed, if we would just take certain
topics to lists that are more specialized. I understand the other side
of the coin, it is just that after a certain point it becomes very
disruptive to the list.
Here are some addresses to check out
Digital hell
Majordomo@resrocket.com
"subscribe Digital Hell"
Digital hell is a list geared towards the digital end of music.
Definitely a good list for you DSP heads.
Analogue Heaven
Majordomo@hyperreal.org
"Subscribe analogue heaven"
AH is for analogue purists, who love their VCO's more than life itself.
Hardware people go here.
There are other lists available, just hunt around the web and I am sure
you will find something that pertains to your interests.
Thanks,
Mike
IDM related: Listened to Raster 15(COH: enter tinnitus) I did not care
for it. A bit to digital for my tastes.
I bought the new EXOS double pack on Force Inc. Very good minimal BC dub
tracks on the outside, and atmospheric minimal texture tracks on the
inside. What else is coming out of Iceland right now, what should I be
looking for on Thule? Lancebot?
