an unusually 'classic' techno record - very stripped down and minimal. loads of "old school" filtering and flanging effects. no breakbeats, no trip-hop, not a funky bassline in sight. nothing like his airier Cusp material, and not served up in one large chunk like _Themes_ or _Gravitational Arch of Io_. there are actual track divisions, most of the tracks running around 7 minutes in length and fused seamlessly. i spoke to Mark Gage about this earlier this evening, and he mentioned that it's completely intentional. _Sweep_ is Gage stubbornly releasing the record he wanted to release, with absolutely no pressure from Polygram to change a thing. it's also much less of a 'floor' album than earlier Vapourspace. but a 3x12" set of [thirteen] remixes (including Air Liquide, Gez Varley, Incarnate, Chris & Cosey, Sean Deason, etc) will be released in early '98, heralding the beginnings of Gage's own label, Knob. sadly, PolyGram UK has declined to release the album. fallout from their falling out with +8. but it will be coming out in Germany and in the US - and vinyl copies of _Sweep_ will obviously find their way across the sea - but there is still no official release planned for the new album. cheers! the INCARNATE remix should actually be the "karmic dub of sativa" mix of "cosmic dance of shiva" from themes from vapourspace...its been sitting for a bit. or is this all mixes by mark? he was supposed to be having something out a year or so ago as well on a label out of vancouver called map run by mick shea but i dont think that ever happened. speaking of those INCARNATE boys they will be performing in toronto as legion of green men on saturday december 13th (well at least the 13th according to pope gregory) along with jarkko, sugar daddy moth, the interchill peoples from montreal and some ninja tuners (or did they say n toners...i forget). the set will be about 60% new stuff to be released later next year and some "xeuxes and the painted grapes" style reworkings of the older logm stuff. thats all i know i swear ; ) j
