a lot of stuff from the mid to late sixties is in the modal style. this is not really when it started but is kinda when it seems to have been a bit more fashionable to play...maybe the cannabis influence kicked in ya know? the modal bit predates the fusion/funk era ala miles' in a silent way, etc. check out most anything on mca/impulse (now grp) from that time frame and in particular miles, coltrane, wayne shorter, & sonny rollins releases. do check out the ultimate modal album and one of my all-time favorite records: john coltrane | a love supreme. and in particular, the track 'resolution'. ironically, the least modal piece on there, but extremely fierce playing by all parties involved. mark weddle <markw@southwind.net> wrote:

well, without getting into the redundancy of track inclusions, i'd get modus operandi since the more interesting rvr tracks are contained on it. essentially, if you went this route you'd only be missing the hidden camera static mix and hybrid, both from the hidden camera e.p. (and rvr) and not exactly spectacular tunes. modus contains more rhythms along the line of the ni ten programming style with a couple downtempo tracks as well. also, the fifth column version on modus is slightly different than that contained on ni ten and rvr. however, don't expect anything revolutionary from the full length. perhaps your money would be better spent on the new arcon 2 full length and a set of depends cause you're gonna shit, friend. |_-.| np.platinum breaks II

That was not the most poetic way of saying if you like the harder sides of Photek or Source Direct, for example, this is something you will want to hear.
