Quick and dirty PowerMac MP3 ripping recipe: Use something like Adaptec's Toast Audio Extractor 1.1 to pull in the CD track to a WAV file. Then use SoundEdit 16 version 2.0.x to convert the WAV file to MPEG-3. To do this you need some plug-ins for SoundEdit 16; specifically, things related to WAV import ("WAVE IMA Import", "WAVE IMA Export"), and SWA (MPEG-3) export ("SWA Streaming Xrta", "SWA Settings (SE16) Xtra", "SWA Settings (Dir) Xtra", "SWA Export Xtra", "SWA Compression Xtra", "Preverb", "Loop Tuner" and "Afterburner"). You can then import WAV files into SoundEdit 16 and export them as MPEG-3's (export as "SWA File" in the dialogue box). Note that SoundEdit 16 can import as WAV from CD as well, but I had troubles with it and found that Toast Audio Extractor worked a lot better. np: Aaron's bleepbloop show from last week (What *is* this awesome track with the sonar sounds and the crunchy Aphexian bits? The Jega track from the V/VM sampler 12"? I *must* own this ... ) Thanks Aaron ... but can you bump up the recording to 128 Kbits/44.1 KHz? hehe - Greg

Even quicker and dirtier: Extract using SoundApp (use "Import to QuickTime"), then use MPecker to encode it. Much cheaper (free/shareware) than the commercial products that Greg recommends (although quite a bit less functional, of course). That's probably the nicest comment I've gotten so far. Yes, that crunchy track (I'm assuming it's the one right after the sample from Disney's "The Black Hole" i.e. "This is the story of the Black Hole. You can read along with me in your book....") is the Jega/Datathief collaboration. Little did I realize the subtle irony of placing the black hole sample next to Jega's samples of people discussing anal sex. As for the recording? I'm simply streaming the mp3 from the wrct.org website onto my hardrive. I turn it on 20 minutes before my show, then turn it off when I get home. Then, I convert the mp3 to wav, chop the excess off, and reconvert it back. Unfortunately, the website only streams at 28.8. Take care. Sorry, mea culpa, I vaguely remembered Aaron announcing it as a collaboration but I was listening at work and I posted the above from my house, at which time brain rot had set in and I couldn't remember the other half ... After listening again at work yesterday it was, indeed, a "Jega/Datathief collaboration", and if Brian's "From: " line is to be believed:

then surely he is Mr. DA7A7TH13F ("Datatthief"? Two "t"'s? Erm) and in which case, I genuflect in his general direction, wave arms from high to low, mumble hail Marys and as salames and worship at his feet :-) Cheers, - Greg
