"Return of the DJ" and "Return of the DJ II" are two double packs on Bomb Records out of San Francisco. Both are phenomenal. Production is heavy on the scratching, with each track feeling like a snippet of a hip hop mixtape, ala qbert or kid koala. -Sho -- sho@goonsquad.spies.com sho@macromedia.com

So where can we get our hands on this stuff? is it easily available through normal record stores or is it like 500 copies pressed kind of thing... -- Ben Coffer Hybrid Productions http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/

I saw both the first on CD and the second on LP at 13.99 a piece at the local store today, so i assume that they're still readily available. I'm low on cash, so I passed them up. Anyone care to post reviews? either way i'll probably be picking both of them up this weekend (if Richard James likes them they must be good</MASSIVE SARCASM>, then again, RDJ also like the DMX Krew, so maybe i shouldn't get them ;-) But, back on the scratch dj hip-hop tip, i picked up the new x-ecutioners (formerly x-men) album, which is excellent. I'll try and get a review up, along with reviews of kandis' senking and the new carpet bomb, as soon as i get 'em done. Speaking of which (I know our asphodel associate mentioned this a bit back, but i don't have my old mail from aol), does anyone know about this 'battle sounds project', i.e. where i can get it. a quick scan of the 'xpressions' credits shows that the the x-outtakes spoken bits (all of five of which blend surprisingly into the album), come from this 'documentary on hip hop djs'. Sounds pretty interesting. Wasn't there a big ol' weekend long fet. in NY featuring this? i'm sorry i missed it :-( sorry if this is off topic, all 'ya idm purists. bye everybody!, m u l t s a n t a . | . a t n a s t l u m

The X-men album is very good. Not *revolutionary*, but a really really good party type album, meant to appeal to all musical tastes, not just hiphop headz. i posted a review after I first got it, and my opinions on it have changed a little, but I can repost it if anyone really cares. The Deep Concentration comp on Om Records is also solid. has anyone heard any of the Piklz mixtapes? I want to pick one up, but there are a few to choose from, so I'm stuck. And regarding battle Sounds. I was at some benefit for it, with the X-men and others performing. Pretty cool history of scratch djing. Supposedly, everytime it's shown, the filmmaker "remixes" it, showing different segments and stuff. I had heard that it's eventually gonna be available to buy on tape, but I don't know what the details are on that. On the hiphop tip... Buy Dr. Octagon if you haven't--Q-Bert and the Automater lay down the phattest scratching/beats/samples combo in quite a while, and Kool Keith has skills to pay the bills. Company Flow is also really good, but ultra-hardcore (not gangsta or violent, just really sparse, brutal beats and rap).

I mentioned it in passing in another post, but the Digital Dust comp on Rawkus Records is amazing, much bretter, in my opinion, than Deep Concentration. Also, if you're going to buy Dr. Octagon, by all means get the instrumental version. I'm a fan of the Ultramagnetic MCs, but Kool Keith's raps completely maul the amazing production done by Automator (although it sadly also leaves off Q-Bert's contributions as well). Other great hiphop selections to check out on the experimental tip are DJ Cam's volume of the DJ Kicks series, featuring freestyles by just about every east coast rapper, and the Latryx cd on Solesides is completely solid. On the subject of the Deep Concentration cd...I checked out the Jurassic 5 cd after hearing the awesome Cut Chemist track on the compilation, and the album sucks. Stock rappers and foul production made me wonder what exactly he was doing with them in the first place. clockwise np: DJ Shadow 'Stem'

_The Instrumenalyst_ (or however that was spelled) is essentially an Automator album. Your appreciation of the Dr. Octagon album will depend on your ability or willingness to get inside the scat/pseudo-science/pseuo-medical sci-fi world Kool Keith raps about. Personally, I think both the production and rapping are great. I'm not sure how much this says about how far ahead of its time Ultramagnetic MCs' _Critical Beatdown_ was, and how much this says about the progress in hip-hop over the last decade or so -- but that's a record to check out for some mad beats (some of which do sound very '88) and even more mad scratching. --Mark

um, unless "doo-doo" recently became a medical term, i wouldn't go around calling Kool Keith's raps "psudo-science/psudo-medical". true he ponders at one point over whether h2o is a gas or a liquid, but just about every other line is about fucking, plain and simple. again, i'm not trying to put him down, but lack of substance is one of the prime reasons most people don't view (non-instrumental) hiphop as a viable art form, and with tracks as utterly amazing as the ones he had to work with, there's no reason to have done such childish, shallow raps as he did. give those beats to Jeru and watch some serious science get dropped. clockwise np: dj shadow "high noon"

Well, the Dr. Octagon album has got nothing on Kool Keith's _Sex Style_ in that respect... classier than 2 Live Crew, but numerous references to water sports (and I don't mean swimming) and so on. Kool Keith claimed he wrote the Dr. Octagon album in a day. It does have that stream-of-consciousness feel, from a man who's apparently been in porno films and at least one mental hospital. Does that provide any insight? I think so. Any idea what's come of the Dr. Octagon Enhanced CD project? I got an email from the management or someone a few months ago, but heard nothing since. --Mark

I'd have to disagree. I mean, to this ignorant white boy's ears it sounds like some good rapping—took me a while to hook into his flow, and his humor, but he has real skills. And even if you're not a huge fan of rap or vocals in general, those of you who are fans of RDJ/Vibertesque humor will really like the Doctor's style. He's a psychedelic robot alien sex-obsessed gynecologist damnit! Throw in Star Wars references, a Transformers sample, and other juvenile shit, and you've got an album all you ween fans will love. The man spent a 5 figure Geffen advance on porn—he must be certifiably insane, or at least incredibly horny. And how could you buy Instrumentalyst if it doesn't have Q-Bert on it? On a related note, i'm still looking for info on which Piklz mixtape to buy. For those of you in NYC, you can get them in Other Music, top shelf of the electronic section, only $8.99. For those of you who haven't seen ads, Bjork is touring the US soon. She's coming to NYC sometime in December (I think the first sunday) at Hammerstein. Tix on sale friday AFAIK. I'll pull the trifecta-Stereolab, Portishead, and Bjork, making me a happy Sam. Sam
