Hey all...this is sort of a 2-sided question....first, in the broader sense, where does IDM go next? I'm inclined to think that in the fairly near future, IDM artists will have tired of expanding rhythm, and will move on to innovations in melody, harmony, and more strange time sigs....I for one would like to see more attention paid to harmony....an element that seems to be somewhat lacking in some IDM work. As for the other side of the question, where do I personally go next? I've basically heard all I feel like hearing (for now at least) of the major IDM-ish artists (Aphex, Squarepusher, Orb, Orbital, et al), and explored all that I want to on the Rephlex label. I'm interested in Atom Heart, but I can't find much info on them (him?). Also, as I mentioned before, I'm interested in Sabres of Paradise, and a lot of the Warp back catalog that I never got around to hearing. Finally, is there anyone out there besides Pentatonik and Off & Gone that has an Orbital-esque sound to them? Yes, I know a lot of you aren't fans of Orbital, but I'm looking for stuff that pleases me, so don't butt in. Anyway, info/opinions on either (or both) part(s) of the question are welcome, but I will ask that if you only have info on the last part of the question, send it to me privately. Thanks. --Matt

have you checked any of the earlier stuff? there was a time when rephlex put out interesting and intelligent music, rather than just jokes, pisstakes, and bochum welt.

him (Uwe Schmidt). well, part of the reason you can't find his stuff is because most of the recent items are under various monikers. I don't have a lot of his stuff, but for starters check out the Real Intelligence series on rather interesting (his label, just about everything on it is by him). it highlights a lot of the rather interesting material. I also dig the lisa carbon stuff, but i'm not exactly sure (is anyone?) if it's him under alias or if there actually is a Lisa Carbon, who works with him a lot. For more info check out the (outdated) discography @ hyperreal http://www.hyperreal.org/music/artists/atom_heart/ there you will find a link to the (not outdated) rather interesting discography. hope this is a good start. as for finding the stuff... I know that etherworld used to have a good selection, but I'm pretty sure they don't do music anymore or something like that :-( otherwise, just try the biggies: modern music, mfr, etc. I know pj@mm recently got in the lisa carbon disc on rephlex (waiting for mine...) hope this helps... mult...... http://rampage.ml.org/users/~multsanta/ [mu-ziq.darcangelo.reviews.++]

they're all GOOD labels, but they're probably not the future of electronic music. basically, all they offering are tweaks and subtle new tricks on very traditional forms. that's where we are. that's where we've been. it would be stagnation or, worse, regression to plow ahead by running in place. if you want music far ahead of its time, you're talking... Rastermusic Mego Lo Recordings S?kh? a-musik Iris Light Noise Museum Switch VV/M NTone Irdial Soup-Disk Mille Plateaux t:me recordings (em:t series) Plug Research (i generally agree about this one) these are the mavericks. they are destined to be underappreciated now, their (often tiny) operations are hardly able to compete for airspace and page-space with those labels currently borne aloft on the shoulders of the press as The Messiahs of Electronica [sic]. yet what they are doing is consistently pushing the music forward and dissolving boundaries. too many of these other labels are putting out reliable - but admittedly retread - records. but these labels - and many others - are daring to be different. progress isn't always lush and harmonic. and you can't always dance to it. and, c'mon... i'm sure Stuart will be putting out fine music. but isn't it a little premature to hail a label without a single release as a herald of IDM's bright future? you may well be 100% right about MFR, but why not hold off on the plaudits and the back-slapping until we actually HEAR an MFR record? ;-) just my $0.02 (or ?.0125) GuerillaG2-G4/ gg gg2g4ink@sprynet.com

Actually, I removed my Dot site... the plod folk have a *great* dot site and it seemed crazy to keep my page up when these two are running a site that might as well be the official site. well worth checking the page out... its an amazing label! Not anymore. The recent "Decay" compilation is the final Ash release. The related Touch label remains, however. I'll probably write some more stuff in response to the earlier posts to this thread sometime over the weekend. I'll also be adding a label called Payola to the list... more on that later... Greg PS: Rephlex auction is going insane. http://www.interlog.com/~stained/rephlex.txt - before it's too late!

<LONG LIST OF VARIOUS LABELS SNIPPED> yes, a few of these i was going to add, but was kinda pressed. for time and just put some of the most obvious and the stuff that i am really into at the moment. I never stated that this was a definitive or complete list. I was expecting some expansion... hopefully he'll have a bit better than 10 sec sound samples up soon (but have to get back in touch with him) as for the 1st 12", i though he was simply attempting to pick any remaining ones up... may be wrong about this (hope i am, its very nice)... i more hope they get some of those 20 track demos done up...
