Agreed. Especially 'Water Margin' (4)...

^^^^^^^^^^ Bollocks. 'Consciousness' is at least as experimental as all the PTK stuff. Listen to those beats and sounds! And a 90bpm headnodder ('Into The 90s') on a jungle EP is not exactly usual...
quoted 2 lines i've never seen them. There are some rumours he's also Aquarius on> i've never seen them. There are some rumours he's also Aquarius on > Looking good (or Good looking) but it sounds shite...
He *is* Aquarius. And he has also recorded as Sentinel for Basement, plus put stuff out on Certificate 18. The Aquarius stuff is worth checking out, although it's a bit more orthdox. Off the top of my head: Aquarius - Drift To The Centre (Looking Good 2) Aquarius - Dolphin Tune/Aquatic (Good Looking 9) Aquarius & Tayla - Bringing Me Down (Good Looking 13) All his pseudonyms were discussed on Breaks a while ago. If you like Photek, there's loads of others you should check out - Source Direct, Skanna (not the Rimbaud one), Certificate 18, Reinforced, J Majik/IR, Hidden Agenda to name a few. Do not underestimate the importance and brilliance of innovative jungle... :) Anyone got any news of the ART/Photek release? Changing the subject entirely: Just got Herbert - Part 3 (Phono). Only 500 in existence until the box set comes out. Definitely more floor- friendly and accessible than 2, but sheer brilliance all the same. Still after 'Radio', 'D is for Doctor'; and is Herbert - Part 1 worth hunting down... (btw: Herbert is the deep house/techno guise of Matt Herbert aka Wishmountain and Dr Rockit, all fucking amazing stuff) see ya ____________________________________________________ tom churchill e-mail: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk 'each new hour holds new chances for new beginnings' dj/musician/clubber/reviewer......scene but not herd ____________________________________________________

as an early instigator of said sentiments, i feel compelled to respond (part. since i ended my first sp remarks with the observation that i bought _hidden camera_ instead of _feed_).

i agree with this criticism, at least with the photek i've been able to actually track down. i own only _ufo_ and _hidden camera_, neither of which i find particularly marvelous, but both of which seem to hold my attention longer than, say, anything i've heard out of squarep. coming at drum'n'bass from an ambient perspective (and no i don't think tpower's all that), it makes sense that i would hold mr. parkes in higher acclaim, considering the degree of attention to mood and atmosphere one finds in many of his tracks. imo, parkes is able--through use of space, dynamics, contrast, and other elements of composition that i don't find very much of in, say, any of the tracks on _feed me weird things_--to say more by way of extremity in a single bolt-action click sample (c.f. "hidden camera") than most of the messy, hyperventilated noodlings of squarepusher. now, that's fine in the scheme of things, but neither do i think photek, at least in his most recent output, is pushing his sound much. whenever a new opart single comes my way i get excited to hear the sort of intricate detail and creative beat manipulation of, say, the truper track on colduct's mix cd (still the best thing of his i've ever heard), or some of the other descriptions of his music i've read. but i don't hear it. i mostly hear, as teep described it, that "thinness," a signature of parkes, it seems, which is fine in and of itself but which, i think, becomes a bit...yeah, _boring_ over the course of several releases that don't stray too far from that... one more thing--the high point of _hidden camera_ is, for me as well as, it would seem, most, "kmj," the longish first track with the excellent cymbal work and trapset fills. this, in short, is why i'm drawn to photek. he may only hit it once every couple of tracks, but when he's on...shit, he's _fuck off_ on.

I'd like to nominate Sean Cooper as official IDM thread ender. Bravo! Dazzling even! The only point I disagree with (and we can leave this off to differences in taste) is the calling of the squarepush sound as "noodly". Hyperventilated yes....but the taste of those noodles satisfy a craving I've had ever since RDJ started playing the tin flute for kicks. Teep<--also not so impressed by the T-Powah

Try the Form and Function (Vol. I and Vol II) 12"s on his PTK imprint (Cat no's PTK 1 & PTK 2), those are my faves aside from the ones mentioned above. There are two more PTK's, 3 & 4, errm... The Physical (which is pretty good) and The Water Margin (which has too many vocals for my taste). There is the release on Metalheads also which is pretty neat, esp. the track "Into the 90's". He has remixed a couple of things on Metalheads, "Still Life" is one, I think. He also has a couple things out as Sentinel. All this stuff should be relatively easy to find.

Um...i've heard the track Hidden Camera, and was extremely impressed...is this a good representation of Photek? Their track from Logical Progression wasn't quite as interesting...which of the two is more indicative of their style? Fun video, isn't it? It could have used some more character development, but a good first try at a visual representation of his music.

In my opinion, Photek leads the pack as far as drum-n-bass goes. Ni Ten Ichi Ryu is probably the most minimal, stripped-down stuff I've heard of his, but I don't have that much of his material. If you're looking for info, the label he released Ni Ten... on is Science, which has been picked up for distribution by Astralwerks/Caroline (in the US, at least). Other stuff of his to look out for it the Hidden Camera EP, and the Natural Born Killas EP on Metalheadz. It was mentioned here a couple days ago that the Ni Ten.../Hidden Camera EPs were going to be re-released as a set by Astralwerks, so you may want to wait... Yes yes... I'm surprised no one's made specific mention of KJZ on the Hidden Camera EP). I was finally able to pick it up a few months ago, and while the intricacy of the title track is most impressive, it's KJZ that blew me away (and still does). Cymbals, tons of 'em, chopped up to varying degrees, syncopated as hell with light drum-fill work in the background over a HUGE, punchy double-bass whose notes are offset by a beat so that sometimes you're not sure where the downbeat is--but not for long, and your head starts moving in earnest again. It's all glued together with space-agey synth chords, which apparently some people think are a cliche, but here they add just the right amount of spaciousness. It's the *beat*, though--its components are totally non-standard, but it gets under your skin and stays there. Well, mine, anyway-- I've never heard anything like it. Cheers! that's my favorite part about nearly any of photek's material...unless i've been listening from the start of a song, i can usually never figure out exactly where his downbeats are...which makes for much fun if you're trying to beatmatch to it. Rings Around Saturn/UFO is rather choppy as well, very similar to Hidden Camera, but it's the implied ufo-spotting samples that always grab me... ....... Speaking of which Photek was Jason Bentley's guest last night for an hour on Metropolis. I caught about 25 minutes of it at the end. A lot of praise and fawning being heaped by old jason but a couple bits did emerge. The Photek full length album is due out in september and he says he has no plans to play live unless he can think of something interesting to do. I wonder who has more money, photek or jason bentley... Just come into possession of Public Energy No. 1. Wonderful stuff. Very, very much like Chiastic Slide but with more in the way of ambient bits, which are quite a bit darker than they were on G Spot. Pretty bit change of direction. Also heard the latest Photek single (forget the title, Japanese sounding one which was the Two Swords mix or something) the other day. This is the sort of direction I wished Tom Jenkinson had followed. Heard Hard Normal Daddy and the jazz doesn't turn me on at all. Is Photek's other stuff along similar lines and does he have any albums out worth investigating? I've heard of the Hidden Camera ep but was wondering if there's going to be a full length in the near future. Tim Those who set out to serve both God and Mammon soon find there is no God.

Check your record shops soon. US release date is 9. Sep. Tower is supposed to have a copy of the full-length _Modus Operandi_ CD on hold for me. As for his other material, it becomes a bit of an expensive proposition at $10 per 12" -- IF you can find them. Can't go too far wrong, though. I also found a Sentinel 12" (same guy) which was diva-oriented drum'n'bass that didn't do much for me. The PTK ("Photek") EPs under the name Studio Pressure are worth the trouble and expense. Also look into Source Direct, particularly "2 Masks" / "Black Domina" -- especially since you like the last Photek single so much. Those records have much in common. I have an extra 12" for trade, incidentally... --Mark

It's out now, but Caroline's dropped the ball on distribution. If you call around to a bunch of shops you should be able to find a copy. If you like "The Hidden Camera" and "Ni-Ten-Ichi-Ryu" this record is essential.

Source Direct comes to mind immediately - there's a singles collection (not unlike Photek's 'Risc vs Reward') called 'Controlled Developments' coming out on Astralwerks before the end of the year. There is a new photek 12" comming out under the Special forces alias on his Photek Productions Label. Supposedly this 12" is comming out in October, but knowing Photek productions that means next year.... I cant read the name of it on my copy as the handwriting is to bad; it looks like 'Something ????'. The photek productions web site is still under construction, and still says estimated completion date is the 31st January 1999.... hum... it said that in november last year.... What I want to know is; will the Photek track 'Nation',heavely hammered by Grooverider, and reported to be comming out on Prototype about 3/4 years ago, ever see the light of day.... This is the amen tune to end all amen tunes... Dan.

I guess you should know how it works: - producer makes a track + sends dats/dubs to selectec djs - the djs play the track for about a year or so - the djs stop playing the track ('cause there's something new) - everybody except for the die hard fans forget that track ever existed - when the sound changed to something new somebody remembers that there was that track they really should put out before it's far to late ... - ... :-) Bye Sebastian -- Sebastian Herrfurth (seher@cs.tu-berlin.de) pages for Bernd Friedmann / Riz Maslen / Daniel Myer / Pole / Jazzanova/SK at http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~seher/music.html

Presha from NZ posted this link to their site which has a ton of info (including track listings) for the upcoming matrix, bad co, dread, infra red and photek LP. http://www.subtronix.co.nz/ Here's the bit on photek:

Look out for many forthcoming Photek releases, the first of which will be the instantly memorable 'Something Else' aka 'The Bleep Tune', aka 'Blade'. Strangely enough, with this release still at least a month away, the remix has already begun to circulate on Dub. 'Something Else' will be the first 12" from the forthcoming Photek Productions album 'Sub Zero'. Here is the full track listing for the album. 4xLP: 1) Something Else SPECIAL FORCES (PHOTEK RMX) 2) Worldwide PESHAY 3) Decoy DIGITAL 4) Prologue SPIRIT 5) Tex DIGITAL 6) Tuesday SPECIAL FORCES 7) Vision DIGITAL & SPIRIT 8) Freeway SPECIAL FORCES CD: 12” version of ‘Bleep Tune’ replaces Photek remix and adds; Propaganda PHANTOM REMIX Special Forces SPECIAL FORCES

Actually the scoop with 'One Nation' was groove was ready to go with it and even allotted a catalog number, PRO006. When it came time to master it, the dat came up missing and that's all she wrote. I read in a interview that he said if Rupert wanted to redo it, prototype would still put it out. You wouldn't believe how many great tracks will never see proper release because of the master being given out to cut plates and it disappearing. :-( brockout.

No this is a new 12"..the Propaganda 12" came out a good while ago... probably late 98/early 99, this is fresh Photek material. Although similar in sound to Propaganda....
