I don't think he is... There's is anothe record floating around called Instrumentals, but I have no more of a clue as to what it contains than him. Equally though, I'd appreciate info and opinions on the Twist single, another oddity, and the MoM/Stereolab 12". Could agree more with John's (snipped) comments about AUTODITACKER - it is excellent, although maybe not better than any of their last 2 LPs which are equally great. If it hasn't been mentioned yet, Microstoria is Marcus Popp of Oval and Andi Toma from Mouse on Mars, is it not? I think they've had two LPs out (Init Ding and something else). BTW, is Oval's Systemish LP still available? I have 94Diskont, but I seem to remember that tracks I heard off Systemish on John Peels show ages ago were much better. I love the 4 shorter tracks on Diskont - are these more like the Systemish stuff or not? Gb.

I have this one. I'm talking about the new single, "Twist". I think it's supposed to be out in November, but I've seen it advertised and mentioned, and just wondered if it was out and what it had on it. It is pretty odd for them to release a single that does comprise of a track from the LP (remixed, or whatever).

Was this just on CD or vinyl aswell. I prefer vinyl... Cheers, Gb.

i believe that both systemisch and diskont are still available on BOTH cd and vinyl. also, someone mentioned their music-making technique and i was wondering whether they make their own music and then burn it onto cd's and THEN screw with the cd's or do they do it to other artists' cd's? there's a track on systemisch that sounds ALOT like something from SAW II (i can't remember which one)--anyone know? -marc-

hard to tell for sure. i was curious so i took 3 of the crappiest cds i could find and drew on the bottom with a black permanent marker.first cd- the player played it normally like there was nothing wrong. second cd- wouldnt play at all third cd- sounded pretty cool, there was no way to tell what the original was(thankfully) and the pattern of clicks/bleeps did not repeat. also, it sounded different on 3 different cd players. not as elegant as oval, but still fun. cl

THANKS for doing this experiment : one which I've certainly been curious about but not brave enough to f* up CD's for :-) It is intriguing that 3 different machines gave you different playbacks... typical! I *

A few years ago, I kept hearing about plans for Oval to release a computer program to "make themselves obsolete"-basically, a DYI Oval program. I was under the impression that they had finished it. Maybe they decided not to release it? Sam

Microstoria is actually Markus Popp of Oval and Jan St. Werner of MoM, not Andi Toma.

Microstoria have three records out: Init Ding (1995) Mille Plateaux/Thrill Jockey _Snd (1996) Mille Plateaux/Thrill Jockey Reprovisers (1997) Mille Plateaux/Thrill Jockey The most recent is remixes of "_Snd" by everyone from Ui to Oval to Violent Onsen Geisha.

Should be ... 2LP on both Thrill Jockey and Mille Plateaux. Definitely easy to find in the US on TJ. Don't know about the availability of the Mille version though ... "M. NICELY" <mnicely@NMSU.Edu> then wrote:

The original CD version of "94 Diskont" on Mille should still be around, but it's vinyl couterpart, which included a second LP of "Do While" remixes, has become very hard to come by, and may (?) be o/p. Luckily, when Thrill Jockey reissued "94 Diskont", they made the vinyl a 2LP set with the remixes. Also, as a bonus, the TJ CD version comes with two extra, previously unreleased tracks ("Commerce Server" & "Shop In Store"). Both have slightly different artwork than the Mille versions.

AFAIK, from what I've read (an interview or two w/ Popp - hard to get anything understandable out of the man), Oval do use/have used other artists CDs in their work, but since they screw with the discs so much, it's extremely hard to tell in the end.

I'm positive I've heard someone else say the same thing, but as I don't listen to Aphex Twin, I wouldn't know. -Patrick np: Terry Riley - "In C" nnp: Final - "The First Millionth Of A Second"

Yes, I thought it had been finished last year. Earlier this year I heard that a CD-Rom disc of material was scheduled to appear, and I assumed that might be this "DIY Oval" thing ... never saw any mention of it after that. Now all I know is that Oval & Christoph Charles have a spilt release (not sure if it's a collaboration at all) scheduled to come out on Thrill Jockey (and I would assume Mille Plateaux in Europe) in January of 1998. Maybe this is finally it? -Patrick np: Terry Riley - "In C" nnp: Final - "The First Millionth Of A Second"
