1) This list has its Left Coast jungle headz, but what about anybody in the know about the New York scene? On that note, I'd like to inquire about a few Liquid Sky releases. Anyone heard the new 1.8.7 album? Also, I've heard mixed things about Genetic Flaw by Wally, and Soulslinger's album--any comments? Are any of the This is Jungle Sky/This is Home Entertainment/Fuck NY Jungle comps really outstanding? And anyone gone out and bought Dog leg Left by Wally and Swingsett? I gave it a listen in-store, and it sounded like Big Soup-esque twisted/abstract trip-hop, but much more inventive, with live vocals on a few tracks, plus one killer drum n' bass track that really ripped my head off. Any reviews? 2) On the DJ Spooky tip, I'm not going to defend his albums, or say he's anything like his hype. However, i have seen him spin some really great sets. And some really awful ones. I'm sure his technical skills are nowhere up-to-snuff, but he's *attempting* to fuck with your head, and it doesn't have to sound *musical* or good to do that. The good sets of his are good because of his eclectic selection. then he adds all sorts of ugly noise, which adds to the effect, when he's having a good night. there are Soundlab DJs with Spooky's selection, but far better skills, and no hype. I -sound might spring to mind, or M Singe. Of course, they could suck too-i'm no expert. Whatever, see them, judge for yourself. 3)Is the Grooverider album any good? Essential? 4) Plug and Portishead are still sounding mighty good. And Portishead reminded me of how great Tricky is. If you haven't heard his stuff, you're really missing out. Anyone heard Finley Quaye, his uncle? Enough outta me, Sam

His album is great but completely different music than his niece's. Has more of a relaxed roots reggae vibe. But then again, that doesn't really fit it. Maybe the only think this family has in common is that they are DIFFERENT. btw you can also check out Finleys Vocals on A Guy Called Geralds album ("Finley's Rainbow').

Genetic Flaw is interesting in it's own way, but not exceedingly jungle overall. As for the quality of the Liquid Sky crew, i'm not overally impressed with anything Carlos (Soulslinger does). I'm basing this on when I've heard him spin live, as I've only heard a couple of his tracks, which were very bad by the way. That one "Ethiopia" was the worst. Anyway, the NYC jungle scene. Two parties, Konkrete Jungle on Mondays, featuring a plethora of crakhedded kiddies. And Jungle Nation on Fridays, featuring of plethora of Vibe Killing Trendoids. Actually Jungle Nation, isn't that bad, it was just better when it was on Thursdays. Anyway, DJ Dara was the biggest thing around here for awhile, but I think he's kind of played at the moment. He's been spinning the same old stuff a lot lately. But who knows, I've heard Dara rip off some amazing sets. Other solid DJ's are Cassien, DB, and Paul C. And Jungle Nation started getting some good guest DJ's back around the middle of the summer. SS rocked my world when he played at Jungle Nation. If two weekly jungle events aren't enough for you, stop by Breakbeat Science on 9th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenue (also the same block his freshness lives on), and check out the flyers after browsing their extensive vinyl and CD collection.
