went to a friends birthday party tonite that was being held at the global village, what do you know - the location of our new club 'metric'. many of my pre-idm friends are seriously into synthpop music which i just cannot fathom in the age of skam. anyhow, there where around 100 people there who came to see two synthpoppy bands play and wish my friend a happy birthday. they where...uhh...synthpop. the last band finished with a depeche mode cover if that means anything. i talked my way into djing after the second band was done. the crowd was seriously ready to dance after that dm cover, they were hungry for some erasure or something i reckon. a hippy chick in black with a shaved head and a headband was at the mixing desk and doing the lights. when the band finished i got up on the riser behind the decks and opened up my black bag. i told the hippy to turn the lights down real low so she did leaving only the black lights on. 'what are you going to do?' she asked. 'you'll see,' i told her. i put on the first track of kulma by panasonic. people looked very confused. 'what are you doing?' asked the hippy in confusion. 'nothing,' i told her 'thats the track.' the owner came up and asked what was wrong. i told him the same thing. as the track morphed from noise and test patterns into a little groove a few people bobbed their heads. some where leaving. most didn't know what was going on. as the track went out i let a few seconds of silence fill the air. then i hit them with the screamer from ab4. a few people jumped in their chairs and alot of them covered their ears. 'you're scarring them off,' said the hippy chick quite worried. 'cool, huh?' i awnsered back. People began walking out in droves, i had cleared most of the 100 people in the room in about 6 minutes. as ab4 went off i hit them with some evane and everyone else bolted outside. i had a wicked time mixing in noises from kulma with evane using the cd pitch control. the hippy chick, who was helping take down the synth pop bands gear was seriously pissed. 'this is just fucking noise, and i can't stand fucking noise!' she screamed at one of the synth pop band members obviously wanting me to hear. 'it's not fucking noise,' i shouted back at her 'it's art!' then i gave the few punters left some tupilaq which went quite nicely into industrial folk songs. the managment gave up and started puting chairs on the tables. the hippy chick was now seriously hostile. she brought up some james cd and slammed it near the cd player. 'track one!' she ordered. i let the industrial folk song finish just to piss her off and then slowed down her lovely james as much as it would go with the cd pitch controls and let it rip. the warbly singer sounded even more retarded pitched way down. she didn't like that very much. i gathered up my gear, put my black bag over my shoulder and headed outside to talk with my friends in the other room. ROTFL!!!!! :) :) I can't *believe* you played AB4's screamy track....no way!!! I could never bring myself to play *that* track.....scary!!! :) Wish I'd been there to see it :) When that girl said "i hate noise" you should've said "ok grandma i'll not play you the nasty music anymore"... -- Ben Coffer Hybrid Productions http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/

happy birthday. so i guess my approach wouldn't have worked... moving the music so gradually into the idm genre that all the synthpop idiots are actually (get this) dancing to and even _smirk_ enjoying! the wicked tunes of today... instead of remaining trapped in yesteryear. nothing like a bit o' shameless evangelism 'eh fresh? bRad's late night attitude 0 gonzi's self-indulgance 1 ps1 the sabres of paradise vs. james jamj mixes are ace. perhaps she missed those... ps2 i'm omitting the cute winks, so add them where you'd like.
