The brown album is UTTERLY essential. In Sides is nice in places but ultimately much more bland in its content. It sounds just like they made in on a load of techno by numbers gear. No interesting or out of the ordinary noises/ideas on there at all. I think the brown LP really pushed the limits of techno - you'll never hear anything with as much groove, melody or depth of sound that it has. Gb.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Oops.

Brown was definitely pushing boundaries at the time (obviously not now though), and is still probably my favourite dance album. You're right, it's unlikely we'll ever hear anything so listenable AND danceable. I think you're a bit harsh on In Sides, mind. It's one of the most ambitious albums I've heard, as though they're trying to create a sort of classical techno thing. But it doesn't kick like Brown does.... Jon

Hardly. 808 State- Ninety & Utd. State Ninety, and Ex:el, both of which pre- date the "brown album" by about 3 years. -- jr

and newbuild (1988) and quadrastate (1988 - 89), done when the hartnolls were having trouble figuring out how to sample from disaster movies (in the form of DS Building Contractors), 808 state were already sampling the headhunters band with psychedelic perfection - orbital aren't fit to lick their boots! as for who's making better music now, unfortunately that's a more close-run thing :-( cheerio! np - teen tonic - pierre henry
