Whaaaat? On a related Luke Vibert tip, did the mixes of Radio Babylon make it to the UK? I have his mix of Asbesto Lead Asbesto which is excellent, crossing over from hip-hop to drum and bass in the middle. Also, what are those remixes of NIN's 'Perfect Drug' single like, and can you get them on vinyl in the UK? I think there's ones by Plug, Spacetime Continuum and other on here. Gb. np: Earthling - By Means Of Beams/Gang Related & Mask - Tear It Up (consecutive tracks from an old mix-tape) non idm: Herbie Hancock - Hot and Heavy (marvellous stuff - more funk than Miles).

i'm sure i'll get flamed for saying so, but trent's original version of Perfect Drug is much better than any of the remixes. the track listing for the nothing release of perfect drug versions goes: 1. meat beat manifesto mix (7m39s) 2. plug mix (6m59s) 3. nine inch nails mix (8m25s) 4. spacetime contiuum mix (5m48s) 5. orb mix (6m17s) i even think the nin remix is better than the others.. the plug mix is nice. a mixture of noisy, crunchy breaks with some vibert magic thrown in. the meat beat manifesto mix is really, really weak.. generic dnb. blegh. the orb mix sounds really bad (and i love lx).. washed out and it doesn't work. shrug. maybe it's me. the spacetime mix is kind of neat.. with some echoed-out children's toy piano sound going on. i'd check it out. i can't help it, i love trent reznor. sue me.. np. autechre 'slip' ------------------------------------------------- wells oliver : s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu "perhaps all pleasure is relief" : w.s.b. -------------------------------------------------

No flames here... Completely agree... I actually like some NiN material (piss off =) and was *very* excited to pick this up... imagine my disappointment when I heard the remixes and to my surprise, I actually end up liking the NiN mix the best. The original is without doubt my least favorite (rather, most disliked) NiN tune. The remixes are by Meat Beat Manifesto, Plug, NIN, Spacetime Continuum, and The Orb. The MBM remix sounds like most MBM remixes, the original track is basically made into an MBM track. If you've heard the MBM remix of Closer, it's the same sort of concept. The Plug remix is a nice d'n'b track, probably my favorite of the album. The NIN mix starts off sounding like a NIN track (heavy layered synths and stuff), and ends up rather Aphexy (or is it the other way around, I don't have the album here with me). Spacetime Continuum mix is a nice, sort of light and trippy tune. The Orb mix is floaty, with bent out of shape vocals. To my ears it's six minutes of boredom. As far as vinyl, in the US it was promo only and had an extra mix by Aphrodite, which I liked alot. I don't know if vinyl was issued in the UK, but it's not listed in the discography. -Matt +----------------------------------+ | Matt Woodard | | mtwoodard@hotmail.com | | http://rio.atlantic.net/~woodard | +----------------------------------+ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I concur. (Even if the original is essentially a demo.)

Is it such a rarity for IDMers to like NIN? (That's a legitimate question, I'm new around here. :-) NIN is part of what made me aware that this music was out there.

More so than Dead Souls? Sure it was a cover, but it was a _bad_ cover. -Matt +----------------------------------+ | Matt Woodard | | mtwoodard@hotmail.com | | http://rio.atlantic.net/~woodard | +----------------------------------+ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

2 reasons why NIN isn't IDM: 1) IDM conveys a variety of emotions; NIN conveys "I hate myself & want to die while either degrading or being degraded". (Personally, I find this humorous, though ultimately quite tiresome, though I suppose that if you don't like yourself as much as I you might find comfort in someone else's self-loathing) 2) IDM doesn't sound like rot n' roll; NIN is rock tarted up with some electronics. I see no reason to discuss Mr.Reznor or his music on this list. Though it is ok to discuss some of his label signees, I also don't see any reason to discuss Mr.Reznor's motives for signing them. We've been through that already, and too many times. Che

I don't want to get into a NiN debate - I don't even know their music. However, are you saying that because a musician conveys only one type of emotion in their music they are automatically excluded from the idm club? bbn

I personally don't care for most nin stuff in general, but i loved pretty hate machine a while back, and it led me to explore industrial for a short period, until that fateful day when i heard ambient works 2, anyway... Say what you will about Mr. Reznor, but you can't deny the fact he has a good taste in music and gets some good remixers. Fixed is amazing and further down the spiral is a pretty good disc. one more thing: you gotta love that great quake soundtrack. who can't enoy three minutes of a guy screaming? np: gary moscheles: shaped...
