keep it all internal... all you need is the computer. go along the 'couple of digital/analogue synths and a drum machine' path and you'll end up making crap demos like everyone else... and as for live shows, why bother?

autechre and aphex twin are using computers almost exclusively now. try making 'come to daddy' on a conventional setup <laugh>

they're over-expensive and out-dated what i think you should be looking at now is getting a VERY fast computer (pentium 2 if possible), a very big fast hard drive, a cd rom writer (to burn demos), about 64 megs of memory and at least 2 sound cards - an AWE64 gold, and one of the new-generation crystal/dream cards like the Terratec EWS64 or Sound Track 97 PCI (the ST97PCI is PCI and about 1/3 the price, so go for that) then you will have a total of 96 voices of sampling power, for less than the price of an akai ram expansion then find yourself a copy of reality softsynth ($500, but look around the newsgroups...) and you will have (if you've got yourself that fast computer) a quite accurate rendition of a 32-voice 4-oscillator 4-filter 4-LFO 4-envelope analogue synth, and a great deal more, inhabiting the inside of your CPU - i can't recommend this program enuff.. i recommend cakewalk pro audio 6 (again, look round the newsgroups...) for your sequencing all this lot, including the computer, would cost you about the same as one fairly top-end akai sampler, except you have a complete studio in a box which is completely expandable later. lo and behold, this is more or less the same setup i'm buying at the moment.. cue the rebuttal from the expensive studio-owners (suckers...) cheerio! np - the sea devils - bbc radiophonic workshop ----- -------- ELTON WELSBY RECORDS, jazz-funk to whiten your spunk http://www.sub-con-geo.demon.co.uk/migration.ram ----- --------

What about the Guillemont International maxi Sound Home Studio Pro 64 Sound card? Anyone try this one? Tony

How about the Super Maxi Blaster Super Duper Digi Sonic Tools Sound Cell Sample Pro Super Computer Pro Blaster Card Gigante? Is moveable-parts no longer operating, or is there no reason this off-topic gearhead crap is on idm? it's pretty awesome. if you can get ahold of the reality audio demo CD, i did the first and last tracks on it (well, first track after the voice intro track). and it's more than 32 voices if your CPU is fast enough (or sampling rate is low enough). it's pretty cool, i think, but it isn't going to replace my K2000 any time soon.

Movable parts was really lively for the first 18 months with regular postings (10-20 per day) but then it slowed down, was dead for a while and was eventually resurrected. But now it lies dormant on holon.net, unused and unloved. It has about 150 people subscribed to it, but most of them have heard all the music production questions in those first 18 months and are happy to lurk. Probably the perfect place to point all the production questions from this list. To subscribe, send mail with "subscribe" in the BODY to movable-parts-request@holon.net or "subscribe movable-parts" in the BODY to majordomo@holon.net. I'll get my arse into gear and put up a simple movable-parts web page right now... check www.holon.net/movable-parts -- Q-Force qforce@holon.net http://www.holon.net/qforce/

EVERTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SOUND CARDS, MUSIC GEAR, YADDA YADDA SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO TALK ABOUT IT ON AH. Really, it's my favorite topic, but as sir CSpot so eloquently declaimed, it's not strictly this-listy. ANALOG HEAVEN This list is strictly analog synths, and tangentially emulations of analogue synths. It is very active, and you need to filter out all the "D00D WH3R3 R TH3 303Z" posts, but some of the most knowledgeable people in synthesis are there. check http://www.hyperreal.org/music/machines/Analogue-Heaven/ for subscription information. ELECTRONICA This list is basically all things to do with electronic music. It's what I think of as the list where people from AH discuss non-analogue equipment. Lower traffic than AH, primarily because it's not at ground zero of the "analogue synth craze" currently going on. Contact james@noether.ex.ac.uk about subscription; I don't know if there is a automated subscription address. PC-DAW Discusses using PC's for music production -- primarily (but not limited to) hard disk recording, but also excellent posts on digital audio in general. MOVABLE-PARTS Discussion of the production of techno and it's related genres. Info was posted earlier about this list. NEWSGROUPS comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.* newsgroups. read about the various sound cards available for PCs until you puke. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Psyche manifests as psychic through something we call 'winding', because it twists, and puts things that were far apart next to each other, complicatedly, taffywise." -- winona on channel 78 Kent Williams kent@inav.net -- http://soli.inav.net/~kent

Done. For now it's just a rehash of the message that you get when you send an "info movable-parts" to majordomo@holon.net. Could go a number of ways depending on what sort of feedback I get. -- Q-Force qforce@holon.net http://www.holon.net/qforce/
