I second that. I'm still happy with my 16+ after several years. Go for an
ASR for more effects and memory if you see one cheap. SCSI interface if
you're feeling flush...

Ae use a Roland R8, which are going cheapish these days.

It was ahead of it's time, re-sampling with effects, modulation of sample
points, transwaves, nice little sequencer with muting, low depreciation
(that goes for most hardware samplers..)
Don't ignore the PC side though, Sound Forge/Cool Edit/Reality/Audio
Architect all offer enormous scope for new sounds. Just get a bit of both,
purism always ends in tears.
