hello i only heard that witchman track once, and my opinion was that it was far less interesting than the 2 eps i own, shapes of rage (leaf) <-this is the one to get - and states of mind (angel) these 2 eps are very dark and more diverse than you may expect... the breaks are not always fast... witchman is not strictly jungle, some tracks are more hip-hop or dub influenced... the unifying element is the murky, eerie production and mood which is very identifiably witchman i've only found witchman on vinyl but i've been hearing about a full-length cd for ages... ? solvent goodbye

I fucking love Witchman. One of my favorites in the drill&bass scheme (hehe.) Here's what i know about 1. Main Vein EP (1995) on Blue Angel - I really, really, really, really want a copy of this. Someone help me out (please?). PS it has a plug remix. 2. State of Mind EP (1996) Blue Angel - one side fucking wicked as shit experimental jungle, the other more of a darkside hip-hop thing. really nice. 3. Shape of Rage EP (1996) Leaf - incredible experimental breaks. his best. 4. Nightmare Alley EP (1997) Deviant - haven't picked this up yet. Modern Music told me it was banned from export? Anyhow I'm going to get a copy hopefully. from what I hear its more downtempo. 5. Explorimenting Bealts LP (April 21 - supposedly) Deviant - full length from the witchster. thats's what I know about, am I missing anything? _____ / ,-,_) /,_) (/ RESH Live & Direct from the G-Spot, Orange County, California, USA http://www1.linkonline.net/fresh/fresh.htm

Was wondering if someone could tell me what Witchman releases exist? A friend played a couple tracks of his for me this weekend and I rather enjoyed them. Someone mentioned a double cd coming out in October...what label might this be on? btw--the latest Finitribe ep "Flying Peppers" features production/remix by Witchman on all tracks...he even co-wrote one. there's an EP between _Explorimenting..._ and the compilation ("Heavy Mental") ... also Roome's first Witchman EP, MAIN VEIN (Rising High(?)/Blue Angel) a handful of remixes on 12"s: Gary Numan, Bowery Electric, Finitribe ("Squelch"), Cornershop ("WOG"), and Cranium HF. and a number of exclusive compilation tracks (FSET #2, #3; Breakbeat Science 1, Avantgardism, East-Westercism and Narcosis (as GOLDWATER on both). possibly others) what ever happened to his project with Justin Broadrick (Clinical?)...? can anyone answer this? if Deviant is bankrupt, how can they continue to release all these records?! and in such expensive formats (4xLP? that has to cost a few ?s to manufacture!) and why are all these Deviant titles always so difficult to find Stateside? Exactly the question I wanted to ask. ;-) As far as I know (agreeing with what Gil said) if a legit release did come out, it was on Blue Angel/Rising High ... Now, my questions are a) does anyone have the 4 track titles for this baby? and b) is one of them "Hedimental" by any chance? I ask because I've heard mention of a 12" with that title (Wire, July '96, p. 38) and I always wondered if it was his first one, or something else. It's listed as being on Blue Angel/Rising High along with the "States Of Mind" 12" (aka "Offbeat"), which would make sense. Just to recap the contributions of PUCKERED1@aol.com and gg2g4ink@sprynet.com, and putting everything in order ... 'cuz I wanna get things straight once & for all. "Main Vein" 12" (Rising High/Blue Angel | Witch 001 Self Released) "Shape Of Rage" 12" (Leaf) aka ("Offworld/Leviathan" 12") "States Of Mind" 12" (Blue Angel) aka ("Offbeat" 12") "Nightmare Alley" 2x12" (Deviant) "Explorimenting Beats" 2LP/CD (Deviant) "Heavy Mental" CD5/12" (Deviant) "Heavy Traffic" 2CD/4LP [collection of EP and compilation tracks] (Deviant) Remixes On 12" (from gg2g4ink@sprynet.com): Gary Numan Bowery Electric Cranium HF Finitribe ("Squelch") Cornershop ("WOG") Exclusive Comp Tracks (from gg2g4ink@sprynet.com): FSET #2 & #3 Breakbeat Science 1 Avantgardism East-Westercism (as GOLDWATER) Narcosis (as GOLDWATER) possibly others ... Anyone else who knows something that's missing, please add it ... Lastly, some more questions/answers: Gil said:
quoted 1 line what ever happened to his project with Justin Broadrick (Clinical?)...?>what ever happened to his project with Justin Broadrick (Clinical?)...?
Shit, I wish I knew. Ever since I heard mention of this back in 1994 and later when I read the short interview in MFTEQ10, I was hoping that it would surface. There was supposed to be a single & full-length, and way back when (as I'm sure you know) both of them were label searching, and assuming someone would pick it up. As fas as I know now (can't remember if John mentioned anything in Immerse #2 ...), John is sitting on a whole lot of recorded material and, waiting for what (I don't know?) ...

Beats me. How recently did they go bankrupt? Anyone know how well the Witchman stuff on Deviant has been selling? My experience with it here (in Toronto) is that it sold/sells very well. Multiple copies came into the stores and were gone immediatley, and every time the records have been reordered, the same thing has happened.
quoted 1 line and why are all these Deviant titles always so difficult to find Stateside?>and why are all these Deviant titles always so difficult to find Stateside?
I've been wondering this myself. Like I said, I've had no trouble finding the material in Toronto, but from experience (with both the US & Canada), UK stuff is always easier to score and available sooner here (at least in the stores I shop in) than in the US. I don't think I've seen any Deviant titles at Modern Music (for example), but I believe Bent Crayon has had some. I've also heard from people in Cali & Chicago who were able to find copies. I actually just sent two copies of "EB" to friends in the States as a result of this "unavailability" ... Lastly, while we're speaking of Mr. Roome, is he planning on a Goldwater full-length any time soon? -Patrick np: Sonar - "S/T"

Glad to hear people talking about Witchman. A damned shame that it's hard to find his stuff here in the States. I'm in NYC and it tooks a couple of weeks to track down Explorimenting Beats and this was from searching at stores that specialize in techno/electronica mind you. When I finally tracked it down, it cost about 25 bucks. I wasn't happy about that but believe me- it's worth it. The best trip-hop stuff I've heard in a while- beats DJ Wally by me. He's also on David Toop's latest CD but that's a UK import here also so it's not cheap either. I know the ads said so, but I'm not sure it is. When I spoke with Barry Fry at MFTEQ (UK) after the 2x12" came out, he said he heard (from Deviant, I believe) that it never made it onto CDEP. -Patrick np: Zorn - Duras:Duchamp

What with all the witchman hype, I was really excited when our radio station got the "Heavy Mental" ep, so I took it home for a listen. I am totally unimpressed. It sounds like the Chemical Brothers in a bad mood, but not half as good as anything the Chems ever did. Weak beats, cliche "dark" chord progressions, etc. Sure, it was kind of enjoyable, but hopelessly derivative. Is everything by him like this?

HM is quite a weak EP, IMO, but worse than the Chemical Brothers??? Explorimenting has its share of memorable moments, but I'd say you should check out his "States Of Mind" 12" (esp. Primal Skin), "Shape Of Rage" 12" (Leviathan & Offworld - long), and "Nightmare Alley" 2x12" (Bullethead etc.) before passing final judgement. John Roome may have jumped on the downtempo/d'n'b bandwagon a few years back, but tell me who hasn't (or won't soon) these days. His material (up to and including Explorimenting) is definitely of a higher standard than most, IMO. In the end it really depends on what _you_ like, and what _you_ consider derivative. -Patrick np: Laswell/Style Scott - "Dub Meltdown"

I've been looking for his LP "Heavy Traffic" on Bomb Central with no luck. Does anybody know where I might be able to find a copy? I've tried several sources with no luck. If you have an extra copy you want to get rid of, or know somebody that does, please drop me a line. Also, is there a discog of his anywhere on the net? With all this talk of "dark d'n'b", one guy whom I've heard often lumped into that category is Witchman. I've never actually heard any of his stuff, however, and he doesn't seem to get much chatter; is it just crap, or what?
1999-03-05 14:37daniel@eliteware.comdefinitely not crap. Some of the material (especially the older material) is predictable.

definitely not crap. Some of the material (especially the older material) is predictable. But there is something brooding and menacing about what he produces. Material that sucks the light out of a room. Check out witchman vs. jammin unit - inferno (availabe in the US on invisble and Blue Planet elsewhere). Not really drum and bass. More like urbanized dub but a good introduction. and there is a witchman page (with sound samples I think) at: http://www.deviant.co.uk/witchman.html -daniel Head Monkey Mad Monkey Records On Fri, 5 Mar 1999, Daniel S. DEFINITELY not crap. I've got three of his releases, "Explorimenting Beats", "Heavy Traffic", and one of his singles. Most of his work is dark drum and bass, not drum'n bass in the usually scenario. Crunchy beats, funky moods, very dark stuff at times. Imagine Photek in a sloppy deconstructed form but with thumping basslines and odd samples thrown in for good measure...
