Loads of people wrote about Mark Stewart and Adrian Sherwood. I write: For even more of those trademark jackhammer beats and earthquakin' grooves, also checkout Tackhead (basically Keith Leblanc, Doug Wimbish, Skip McDonald and Adrian Sherwood). They kind of form the backbone of all that On-U Sound stuff which encompasses so many projects - Gary Clail, Barmy Army, Dub Syndicate etc. Some of the later Tackhead stuff is a bit too 'clean' for me, but there's an album called 'Tackhead Tape Time' credited to Gary Clail's Tackhead Sound System which consists of arse-rumblin' Tackhead grooves cut-up, remixed, rearranged, generally chuffed about with and Gary Clail's weird distorted Bristolian rants over the top. This I like. There's also an ace album called 'Major Malfunction' credited to drummer Keith Leblanc, although this is a Tackhead album to all intents and purposes. This I also like. All this stuff dates from the mid-eighties. Very hard, crunching funk. Keith Leblanc, Doug Wimbish etc. were essentially the in-house rhythm section for Sugarhill Records - without going into the history here, if you don't already know, they deserve much respect. Ta ra, Damon. ears now twitching to: The Fall - Live At The Witch Trials

lots of the best tackhead/gary clail/fats comet/keith leblanc material has been compiled onto two CD compilations: "Tackhead: Power Inc" volumes one and two. on Blanc records (keith leblanc's label). very very very worth checking out. intense beats and funk to spare. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications ...I was an infinitely hot and dense dot...

I'll 2nd that! I prefer volume one personally. Similarly, if you can find Gary Clail's Tackhead Sound System aka Tackhead Tape Time, it collects several singles in re-mangled form (improvements over the 12"es). The Power Inc. comps have better sound, though -- better bass EQ mainly. As for the earlier comment about "Squarepusher of the 80's"... maybe someone can explain the appeal, but having heard _Feed Me Weird Things_, there was too much chaos vs. not enough strangeness...not surreal enough. (If you weren't keeping track, I am all in favor of chaos.) I'm open-minded, though -- if there's another release in which the balance is different, I'll check it out. --Mark __ <http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome> < MPEG & RA audio clips > m u s i c : w e b : s o u n d d e s i g n : h t m l : c g i : e t c "Put them who threaten possessions and power together with them who offend our tastes in sex and dope.
