I read from the list a complaining that show of artists like Aphex drive the ravers out. Which makes me wonder...what music is considered "non-raver friendly" material. I assumed that if electonica was danceable is could be included in the rave chaos? Isn't Aphex danceable? (Sometimes I can't stop my feet!) THX

depends on the local scene - the different areas can vary quite a bit. in LA, it's easy - play trance, funky west coast breakshit whatever, quasi-spiritual fodder, etc.etc.. and they'll dance play anything experimental in nature, and they don't know what to do with themselves. mostly, we play our 'idm'ish tracks in small, non-rave venues here. ø pn|funkstorung|breakart ep|music aus strom

AFX may be danceable on albums. Live, it's an iffy proposition (I tried off-and-on, with only limited success. And no, i wasn't complaining about his lack of danceability. I was just commenting on it, maybe even laughing at the silly ravers). His live set was really really loud, really assaultive, got really fast at times, and as Chris Fahey said, he killed grooves before they got anywhere. Generalizing about much of dance/rave music, there's a definite groove, the beat is repetive or at least consistent, and the music is fast, but not insane fungle fast. Even jungle has a danceable bass line, and loops, loops, loops. And yes, people do dance to hardcore and other insanely fast stuff, but they're a select group of ravers (probably those on the most insane drugs). Same thing with We's set. There were danceable sections, but they threw in NOISEY drum parts, ambient sections, and some pure noise, and most people couldn't take it. Their loss. Also, ravers tend to like their sets consistent with regard to genre. They like a house set, a jungle set. not a mixture of styles. Well, that's my grossly inaccurate, biased, and just plain goofy opinion. Sam

The thing with Aphex is that even though he make get a really good groove moving he usually kills it or changes it, making most of his music (even though ingenious) not too good for raves unfortunately. But there are always exceptions. -Aaronnn.

I remember hearing Aphex's 'Digeridoo' in a couple of Raves in the early 90s. All the acid heads liked it even though they had no idea who it was...

in th UK, Digeridoo was a big, influencial rave track back when it first came out. It got massive play on all the pirates and became a rave anthem. It even got on the tunes of the year on Pete Tong on Radio 1 (though I think that may have been over a year from its original Rabbit City release) J ^ Steady J aka James Skilton steady-j@geocities.com Autechre & SKAM discogs @ http://subnet.virtual-pc.com/~sk393820

I'm pretty sure that, upon playing Digeridoo to a friend of mine about 4 years ago, that he said he'd heard Annie Nightingale play it on Radio 1 !. scary -- Ben Coffer Hybrid Productions http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/
