As far as i'm aware this has been delayed yet again. I've been asking in my store for 3 weeks now and they tell me every week that it's been delayed for another one. It's meant to be brilliant as well martin

Here I am with Tortoise's "Millions now living..." spanking new, and 13:52 mins into track one - the 20 minute opener - _ it sounds like it sticks and jumps_. Darn. On closer inspection and another run-through and a general survey of their history and biog, it would appear that this is the way it *should* be ??? Could that be? That they integrate studio mishaps and bloopy samples and feedback and squikrs ... hmmm. Yep, that's it - they did it on purpose to scare the hell outta you. Dunno how many people have jumped up to try to eject the damn thing outta their player before it kills their player. I've got a friend that's got it on vinyl - loses some impact.... cya brian

hey, i have funki porcini's 'hed-phone sex cd' and right in the middle of it it has a break that ticks and scratches and then says something along the lines of 'your cd player will not faithfully reproduce track seven, please press pause and try again' i played it for a bunch of my friends who were hearing it for the first time on lots of strong acid. very funny. there was a hush and then a large chorus of "what the hell!?!" it's funny, on the outer sleeve of the cd it says 'if you are not completely satisfied with this cd, listen to it again and realize that you have wastyed your money!' later, peace, love and ambience. d... d@techno.ca orbital@clo.com http://www.clo.com/~orbital

saw tortoise @ bard college in New York tonight... after seeing them 2 other times, i knew what to expect, but they absolutely blew me away. they played many familiar snippets of songs and did most of the songs on _TNT_ as well as old favorites... these guys love to play their music, and the crowd was loving every second of it. they put on one of the greatest live perfomances i've ever seen. also had a chance to smoke a little herb with dan bitney and john herndon of tortoise and that was quite an experience. they are some of the nicest guys i've ever met. check tortoise out when they come to your town, you won't regret.. (oh, oval was good too, but Markus has to quit doing live perfomances... doesn't translate well) -mc

I'm sure a billion people have responded to this, but think of tortoise as a mix between "rock", "new age", "electronica", "math rock", "low-tec electro", "techno", "jazz" and the occasional off the wall influences like "spagehti western". Stimulating sounds from Chicago's Thrill Jockey Records, Tortoise's music is relaxing and interesting. Vocals? nyet idm? nyet worth checking out? definetly and while you're at it, you might want to check out Isotope 217 which contains members of Tortoise Luke

Actually (just to nitpick) on their 7" Lonesome Sound/Reservoir/Sheets release (Thrill Jockey 007, I believe) there are vocals. But since then, exclusively instrumental.

It could be argued that Djed comes close.

I'll second that. Their releases actually improve with age and repeated listening. There's always Isotope 217 (Tortoise side project). And Godspeed You Black Emperor are good too. Similar epic sound construction that reminds me of "The Millions Now Living..." although not quite so jazzy. This is the extent of my knowledge of postrock. peace. -andrew $buy it$

You might wanna try Fridge. They are kinda Tortoise-y. I've heard indie-rock types say that they're "like Tortoise, but can actually play their instruments" I don't know about that (I really like Tortoise and I think they're good musicians. Some post-rock that's not too much like Tortoise that I've been getting into lately is from a band called Cul de Sac. Their album "Crashes To Light Minutes Before the Fall" (on Thirsty Ear) is very good. Hope this helps, Jeff

If its post rock your after, then apart from Godspeed, who are lovely, try Magnog: a nice combination of guitar strumming, droning, quiet singing, and spaced out electric guitar noises. Windy and Carl, who do quiet humming noises are good as well, and they're all on a Kranky sampler CD (if its still available). The Sea and the Cake are good, and they're an offshoot of Tortoise. Rothko are as much fun as you can have with three bass players and nothing else. They do low frequency soundscapes that are occasionally electrifying, but don't always get going. Finally, I've said it before and I'll probably say it again MOGWAI ARE SUPERB. Buy come on die young AND young team AND kicking a dead pig (remix album: a tenuous link with idm) AND ten rapid NOW. Sell your house if you have to. Sorry about that. Jorkens Without contraries is no progression
