What's the point anymore... I'm a 17 year old kid who's dropped out of school and the only thing I've got left is to try to get into the music buisness. I used to think I had the talent, but now it seems I don't have much of anything. What do all you IDMers do for a living? I started listing to electronic music around Nov. 96' and nothing much else interesting has been happening to me since. I've always been a composer but have only recently been working with electronic music. Before that the only thing I made was classical music. People say it was good, but I would never never make a living at it I know, no matter what anyone might have said, there just isn't the market for it. Well not I'm ready to just say FUCK IT, cuz there aint nothing left anymore. I really liked electronic music, but fuck, how can I expect to make it anyway, it's not something I've been into a long time, so fuck. I don't even fucking dance! fuck it, I just don't have what it takes, and what's worse, don't have anything else either. Music was all I had, and now I don't think I even have that. Some of the best IDM makers don't even listen to that much techno type stuff. Find your inspirations from other sources, dig through old design books, old photography, and your grandma's record collection. If you are only seventeen, and have been into this type of music for a year or so, then you have a *ton* of homeowork to do. Hell I'm 25 and I feel like I don't know shit yet! As corny as it sounds, education is the key my friend, no matter what field of study. You have to see the big picture, and that doesn't come into focus very quickly. Actually it takes a lifetime. You'll see enough of it to come up with some serious stuff when you really get down to biz and follow your passions. you have to believe in yourself to make it in the electronic music biz. there's not a lot of money there to start with (unless you get lucky and become the next Prodigy - good luck), so you better have enthusiasm to fall back on when the checks dry up. also, if you're really 17, you don't know anything about anything. pardon me for being ageist, but it's true.

i work in the computer biz. the electronic music thing brings in a few grand each year, not nearly enough to live on. in fact, not even enough to cover the gear & supplies to keep my studio fed. and i get home from work, tired & crabby, and not in the least interested in writing music. somehow i find the time to keep it going. and i have a trickle of releases and a slowly snowballing reputation. it's slow, hard work.

you could probably make as much doing classical as idm. unless, as i said before, you get lucky. hey, you could be the next kronos quartet or something. just as likely as being the next Prodigy, really.

you might be a rare talent. hell, get a sampler and get to work. my early shit was embarrassing. my friends early shit was pathetic but then he got a little better and got lucky and wrote a (relative) hit and now he's got a decent deal.

Sounds like me :) I too work in the annoying industry known as the 'computer industry' and I nearly always get home from work too tired to do anything in the studio. I still haven't worked out how most of my gear works yet because of my job. I know where you're coming from, and I agree completely: fuck it. Here's what I can tell you: you either (1) go back to school or (2) do music. If you do music, you either (1) do it as a hobby and get a day job or (2) make IT your job and work your ass off getting set up in the industry. You are NOT going to make a career out of the underground/IDM/esoterica/experimental scene. (OK, it can be done, but I can count on one hand the people in the world who have pulled it off, and they were incredibly lucky, rich, or smart.) You have to get smart and study the industry and network to find something that will support what you want to do, or go back to school to get the skills and degree to do same. --Seofon

Get back in school, post haste. When you start doing something about the problems in your life, acting patiently cuz things don't happen overnight, and finally start seeing the payback, you'll realize how it's all done. Finally, whining, worry and blaming won't get you where you want to go and will only alienate you from others who may actually be there for you. You're very young, so just stick with it. Marie

I don't think there's anything *wrong* with quitting school -- you can always go back, after all -- but if you're not quitting in order to make it possible to do something you're passionate about, you should probably go back until you have concrete plans for something better to do with your time. And I really doubt that getting into the music business is the only option you've got open to you. I think this is a pretty common phenomenon. Most electronic musicians have to support their passion with a day job :(......I'm in a similar situation, I work in a lab all day and then come home dead tired. I usually get tons of ideas during the day but by the time I get home to my sequencer I'm pretty spent. What I try to do though, is put aside 2 hours a day during the week(it usually ends up being longer) to work on music and as much time as I can squeeze in on the weekends to do stuff. It may take a while for me to get a track done, but the ride is just as fun as the destination. Electronic music is definately hard work, but I've got some massive highs just jamming away with a few synths .....its times like that that make it all worth it.
