New Order
Video 5 8 6
Touch TONE 7 (UK)
1 track, 22:25
Resurfacing more than 15 years after its recording, fully restored on CD,
this piece was originally commissioned for the opening of the Hacienda
club. It became the prototype for the songs "5 8 6" and "Blue Monday."
Imagine a reconfigured "Blue Monday" and meet it halfway with that gritty
early-Cabaret-Voltaire-style grunginess and starkness, extend to 22.5
minutes, and you're there. Interesting in the sense of helping illuminate
how New Order evolved from the shadows of Joy Division to the bright lights
of the dance floor. Like a "demo" track in many ways, it feels like an
experiment and a groove at the same time. Completists will need this CD,
others may want it as a curio or historical piece.
Six and a half out of ten.
