Saw Tricky last night at Hollywood Athletic Club. Here is a semi quick review. . . If anyone ever has a chance to see a good techno/idm/electronic show there DO NOT HESITATE as it is prolly one of the best setup places around. The room is the size of a small basketball court with a small balcony that runs all the way around the room. There is a good sized dance floor and full bar (always a plus). The stage is large and set up on one side of the room (which means you can be on the balcony directly over the band if your lucky (and friends with security dont hurt either). The sound system in this little room is incredible. Nice and clear sound. As far as the show is concerned, Tricky was amazing as usual. The crowd left a little something to be desired. All the a**holes who live in the state of CA must have showed up there. Some guy almost beat the hell out of my roomate cuz she (yes he wanted to beat up a woman) asked him to move over so the girl behind him could see. . I cant believe what the scene has turned into around here. A bunch of rave/skater kids (i looked like one of the oldest guy in the room and im only 23) causing problems for the rest of us who just wanted to see a good show. I was right up against the stage and otherwise the show was very good. The sound guys were pretty shitty though. Little too much feedback on the mic's and if you were stuck in the back of the room then it prolly sounded like just a loud hum (but that is why you stand in the front). Anyhow, im still rather angry about the quality of people that attend the shows around here. That guy made me really angry, as did the lame ass frat boy who pushed me cuz he didnt like the way I was dressed. I guess it makes him feel like a big man or something. . . . ok back to my sulking. . . NP - something to take away my anger - They Might Be Giants 'John Henry' TinOmen Tyranny4You@earthlink.net http://www.thefaktory.com ". . .And they all died in a horrible fiery death, mangled steel, blood, ear piercing screams...all to the technoized beat put forth by a TR-909" -TinOmen-

Ah, so you must ask yourself a question: Would you rather deal with a bunch of assholes at 'hipster' type clubs and hear some ok music (and get in a fight or two), or stay home with some friends and hear some really good music? My tolerance for bullshit like that has gotten quite short. There are quite a few clubs in LA that I WILL NOT GO IN. Period. No matter who is playing... Gonzi tried to get me to go into the Hollywood Athletic Club a month ago (to see Josh Wink for fucks sake!) I told him 'a guy's gotta have some standards!'. And that's the truth! Don't support shitty venues, it only lets them know they can do what ever the fuck they want, and get away with it. Yet another example. Talvin Singh was here in LA a few weeks ago. he played 3 shows. I went to none of them. Why? First show was at grand central station, on the hottest day of the year. Not to mention it was a private type event. I was called an hour into the event by a friend who was there. He said come on down, you can get in no problem because it's not very crowded. I didn't go. (too hot, too stoned, too lazy:-) Second place was at Quango Sound Lab (formerly Bossa Nova), less then a mile away from my flat, in the heart of boys town. Me at Bossa Nova? Right! Third night...Frequency at the Hollywood Athletic Club. Same as Bossa Nova...Don't like the crowd, which consists of people who are out to be seen and don't give a flying fuck about the music. I'd rather stay home and play with myself. :-P Which brings us to the last pointless point of this post. I really didn't give a shit about missing Talvin Singh, since he was 'just' spinning records. Why you may ask, does that make a difference? Well yes...and I'm going to continue this one in a fresh post! peace out, brock. np: nothing at the moment.
