Did any other IDM'ers in LA go see _Cinema Electronica_ at the Resfest- Digital Film Festival this weekend? I went and I was curious what anyone else thought about it. To me, the Coldcut _timber_ video was the BOMB! Goddamn there must have been a lot of SMPTE code stuff going on. That fucking chainsaw sample/sync part was excellent. After this evening, I am a bigger Coldcut fan (even though someone else has to do with the movie). The _Helter Skelter_ (MBM) flick was excellent as well. I sure wished I knew how they make these movies, fucking cool. I believe many others will find humor in parts of the Josh Wink "Are you there" flick. The best part of the evening was taking my 63 year old dad with me. He was the oldest guy at the show, gotta keep him young:) This thing is moving on around the country and I highly suggest every IDM fan in going!!! If you have enjoyed at least 10% of any AMP show, you will enjoy 100% of this gig. dates are as follows: 9/25-9/27 San Francisco- Palace of Fine Arts Bay & Lyon St 415 267-4848 10/18 Chicago- Museum of Comtemporary Art 220 East Chicago Ave 312 397-4010 10/24 New York Directors Guild of America 110 West 57th St 10/25-10/26 New York The Lighthouse 111 East 59th Street NYC 212 330-9093 12/5-12/6 Orlando Enzian Theater 1300 South Orlando Ave 407 839-3200 0 np: Darren Price _under the Flightpath_ (someone take it off repeat mode for me) .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. 0 (zero) "before Elvis, there was nothing" <galaxey@earthlink.net> - John Lennon ::your IDM friend for life©:: ~disc of the year= Lunatic Harness ~flick of the year= Angel Baby *now accepting donations for a NORD ][ rack .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . .. . ..

Yep, we went on Friday night. All the Coldcut videos (well, almost all) were awesome. Much respect to the Coldcut & Hexstatic crew. (They showed "Panopticon", "More Beats & Pieces", "Timber", "Atomic Moog", and Part II of the Nature vid from the CD-ROM.)

I liked the video quite a bit, but the remix used as the soundtrack was whack.

Yeah but it was one of the more boring videos, and I for one have had quite enough of 303 workouts, thank you very much. The other highlights for me were the H-Gun video "The Yellow Mix" with music by Japan's Enitokwa; great Detroit-ish Techno mixed with Japanese motifs that made for an interesting sonic mixture. Also Ben Stokes' video for The Orb's "Asylum" was great, 1926 Deconstructionist Russia motifs with The Orb being launched out of cannons as part of some odd public festival thingie. The two short computer animated pieces with Young American Primitive music backing were quite good, too.

Heh, I brought my 54-year-old brother; other than the Coldcut stuff, he wasn't terribly amused. :-) (But he did enjoy the "Ms. Resistor" piece from Will Vinton Studios that was being shown in the lobby by the SHORT media journal people who make the SHORT DVD audio/video magazine, which was pretty darn nifty. I want a DVD player with the full "Baraka" on DVD ... )

I dunno about 100% (personally, I could care less about Dr. Octagon's "Blue Flowers" and I see no point to Howie B's low-tech "Music For Babies"-related videos), but I agree that every American IDM'er within reach (SF, NYC, and Orlando Florida; the program also mentions October 18th at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, but it's not on the separate flyer for some reason) should check it out. Go to http://www.resfest.com/ for more info. - Greg

All but one of the Coldcut videos (there are 8 included on the CD-Rom that comes with the new record) were put together by Coldcut and Hex (most members of which are fairly interchangable, ie...Jon and Matt are also members of Hex, while some Hex members also contribute to Coldcut projects). The one thing you should understand with most of these videos (Timber, Natural Rhythm, Frog Jam, etc...) is that Coldcut and Hex worked on these simultaneously. That is to say the track didn't come before the video or vice versa. All the sounds you hear are taken from the video source that you are seeing. Taking sampling that one step further and throwing away the big business bullshit concept of a video being only made to promote a song. Glad you liked the videos. Ninjas

I know, and it gives me a fuzzy warm feeling in places I never knew I had. Seriously though, it seems as though coldcut is the only group who has risen to the occasion (AMP) and actually done something worthwhile with it. You guys rock! One question I have, though -- did amp contact you, or did you contact amp? I've got a feeling its the latter.. --brett On Mon, 18 August 1997, at 19:32:21, Ninja Tune/Discreet wrote:
