is anyone else familiar with trans am? saw them last night at cat's cradle here in chapel hill, along with golden [nice indie rock], and tractor hips [indie-art-jazz-rock with the best drummer i've heard since max roach] Before Trans Am came on, they were playing Anvil VApre ovre the system so i was getting pretty excited that they were going to be quite good [and even tho i dont really like autechre, that shit was dope at high volume]. long story not as long, they played mostly non-descript yech indie rock [and i DO like indie rock when it's just right], one death metal type tune which was hilarious, and three or four electronically based songs. One was kinda like miami vice music haha, and the others were a little too simple and slightly amateurish to impress, but ONE song was absolutely fantastic: mix aphex twin distortion and sparse spooky melodies, with autechre-ish industrial-electro-complex rhythms, add some nice little live drummer touches and some very well used guitar drone and voila.... worth seeing for that song j

this track is featured on their latest 12". the title escapes me at the moment but it is the only 12" they have released AFAIK. i think one track on there is actually just the drummer. i think the one they play live is a deviation of it. i agree it is worth seeing them just for this one song, although i was able to admire the drums for a lot of other songs too. they are pretty funny as well. david *+* on now:amon duul-psychedelic underground http://home.connectnet.com/lotus/

this could be the illegal ass 12" w/ randy groove which is probably out of print by now. there is a version of this on the new album though, although i'm sure a 12" pressing is probably better. also interesting is their split 7" w/ thigh masterseen. they do a cover of kraftwerks man machine. david *+* on now:flare-re-grip http://home.connectnet.com/lotus/

i don't know too much about them, but a friend was playing them t'other day, and i thought they were fantastic. someone was asking about noisy idm, and there was one track onthis album (don't remember the name - i seem to remember it had a sort of sunrise effect on the cover) that featured the most glorious sequencee of white noise you are likely to hear. it really sounds like they destroyed some of their equipment producing it. mike On Wed, 13 Aug 1997 PLeXitMIND@aol.com wrote:

I just bought "surrender to the night" and I love it. It's very diverse and not purist electronic, but it's innovative and subtle in it's appeal. It reminds me of Ritchie Hawtin in some respects, mostly in it's rythmic complexity. There is alot of analog drum use and a fair amount of distorted percussion. Lik I said it's diverse, but it maintains an integrity at the same time, I would recommend it to anyone who isn't stuck in a techno-only mindframe. And who is willing to give it a good few careful listens. B R E N D E N

I'm partial to the first, self-titled album myself. It's not as experimental, and not as IDM-oriented (if the second is at all), but the songs are cooler and the retro-Moog passages are a lot of fun. The missing link between King Crimson, indie-rock, and electronic(a)... ---------- John Bush.

"the surveillance" was released in the u.s. on thrill jockey, march 10 1998 and is pretty widely available, at least around these parts. had heard rumours about a japanese issue with a bonus track, not sure if that one has been released yet. the band start their u.s. tour this thursday in columbus ohio and will be moving throughout the midwest in the next coupla weeks...miss at your own risk. dates at: http://www.brainwashed.com/thrilljockey/tours.html ((audio))pig

Soundly seconded. All of your favorite bits are included in the live performance, from the vocoded-vocals to the larger-than-rhythm interplay of sebastian thomson's acoustic and drum machine beats. At the show in Baltimore this past saturday night their sound-guy played before them all by himself. 'pines of nowhere' is what he called his thing, and it was quite an enigmatic 'thing' he had going -- shifting between a tape deck, a drum machine, a guitar, and some odd effects, it came across as a strange hybrid of cylob and the sex pistols. :) Nick +---------- -- - - - - |UnderscoreEntertainment www.gl.umbc.edu/~nworth1 iDM Bawlmer Stylee |UnderscoreMailingList www.egroups.com/list/underscore Chitty Chat |IDidATripleTakeToday mp3.musichall.cz/IT3 Impulse Tracker ver.3! |

That would be one Jonathan Kreinek. "Futureworld" is pretty amazing solely on an appropriative/production level, a trait which is indebted solely to Jon. He was a great engineer/producer back at school, now he's apparently something of a phenom. Missed his live set up here, but I hear it was pretty surprising. umm... i was totally embarrassed for the guy. his gear was a guitar, a tape player, some effects rack and a tiny Boss Dr. Rhythm. i don't mean to slag him: i'm sure he's a fine guy, and if he produced futureworld, then he's got quite a bit of talent in that department, but his set... uhh... it was so weird. surprising, yes. but probably not in the way you'd think of when someone says, "man, that guy makes surprised me!" sorry i can't be more descriptive... the only phrase i can think of for what he was doing is "rocking out." "rocking out." with quotes around it. ,rj../ ___,"www.gl.umbc.edu/~nworth1 ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
