what does this have to do with idm? idm is for discussing the merits of vinyl vs. cd. if you're gonna discuss this kind of off-topic crap, take it elsewhere. read the faq, buddy... but as long as we're going off on tangents: are there any djs out there making experimental mixtapes? i like to listen to mixtapes in my car but all i get are hiphop 'tapes cuz the average jungle/techno/house tapes i see in shops are pretty boring after a while (to drive to). i'd love to hear a tape with crazier stuff (but still MIXED, maybe even some weirdass scratching)...pushbutton objects would be cool mixed with some classic hiphop instrumentals...i know about eric hill's *recent electro* tape and that's all. grant h, you have anything? i'd definitely pay several bux for a fat tape. r$ note: i'm not talking about taping rare stuff for people, just about mixtapes, an artform in themselves. for instance i would love to have sm@4thworld's set on a tape but i don't have the technology to put it on one... this isn't a tangent, it's what the list is here for.

Alright then, offer taken. I've got my radio show tonight, and I'll do two 45 minute sets of experimental mixing for you (and others). I've been trying recently to archive a bunch of my stuff via realaudio on my web site, and I'll make it available via tape for those who want it, and realaudio for general consumption. I was looking for something cool to do with my show tonight anyway. Expect maurizio-style techno dub, deep drum-n-bass, some hip-hop and abstract beats, and other fun things. It'll be 90 minutes total, two 45-minute sets. I should be able to have realaudio available within a week, and those who want it on tape can mail me a blank. getting ready for tonight's radio show, Bill / dj marathon btw: the 4 sets of realaudio I have up right now are at: http://www.hu.mtu.edu/~wdvanloo/personal/future/ra.html -- f u t u r e listening radio show - hosted by dj marathon t h u r s d a y 10pm-1am o n wmtu 91.9 fm e l e c t r o n i c m u s i c * w i t h * s o u l http://www.hu.mtu.edu/~wdvanloo/personal/

agh. i've been wrestling with this one. i'd really like to make some stuff public outside of real audio, but that would just push me further towards true dj-dom. i do have three 90 minute mixes on hard disk just waiting to be exploited: drum'n'bert / intelligent ernie music [the leftfield of everything] airport '97 [ambient pads + hiphop/d+b] coping with obsolescence the coping with obsolescence mix really isn't beat driven at all. it's sort of a piss on what paul miller is doing; just taking soul, rockabilly, classical, and jazz records + beat matching them. with a little production savvy, they turned out quite nice. agh again. i guess i will make these 'public' cuz i like them so much. i'll post a tracklisting later in the week + start working on getting the tapes duplicated + the packaging run off. i know bill vandaloo / dj marathon has real audio recordings of his radio show online + they're outstanding. anyone can beat something into an RA file, but it's obvious bill gives special attention to production details; volume, eq, etc. don't know if they're available on tape, but i'm sure bill will poke his head and give better info. g.

Right on; that's the attitude to have. This is really what the net is about for me: people contributing to a greater whole.

Thanks of course for the glowing complements once again. Really I've just been making sure that I've got good volume levels to tape, and recently I've not been using any noise reduction. This allows for slightly hotter levels (I think), and makes the resulting realaudio a bit brighter (less digital sludge). Grant mentioned tapes. I guess I'll go ahead and extend the offer to the already-there realaudio. If there's a set on my website you'd like to have on tape, I'm perfectly willing to dub copies (provided a blank and maybe a dollar or two for shipping). By the way, I thought of a final twist on the idm-mixtape thing: If people are interested, mail me with a track or two (no more than 3, please) that you think would be interesting in the mix tonight. Sort of a idm request line; I can't guarantee anything (I may not have the track, or it might not fit), but it'll be interesting to see what turns out. I'm planning right now on using 2 turntables, 2 cd players, a mixer, and quite possibly a small effects box on the turntables (delay/reverb/etc). Send those requests on out (to the list or me personally, makes no difference although it'd be interesting to see the requests others make). Bill VanLoo / dj marathon
