My boss just loaned me this...and he's high if he thinks he's getting it back! "Sacrilege" is 2 CD's of remixes paying homage to the German group known only as Can. These guys starting pushing the envelopes of ecclectic, experimental and pop music back in the late sixties, and disbanded sometime in the late seventies, only to regroup briefly in the eighties, if my memory serves me correct...I'm not too knowledgeable on Can so somebody please correct me if I'm wrong or just feel free to fill in the blanks.... The remixes on "Sacrilege" have been produced by the likes of: Brian Eno System 7 Carl Craig Sonic Youth/Warton Tiers (wtf....actually, it wasn't as bad as I expected) The Orb A Guy Called Gerald Francois Kevorkian & Rob Rives (wasn't there a thread recently asking about FK?) Pete Shelly & Black Radio U.N.K.L.E. Secret Knowledge 3P Westbam Bruce Gilbert Sunroof Air Liquide Hiller/Kaiser/Leda It's really hard to describe all the different genres represented in these works. The tracks run the gamut from electronic jazz, to Drum and Bass, to breaks, to trip-hop, to <insert label here> My fave is Air Liquide's rendition of "Flow Motion," it's this great fusion of creeping synth-pop, organic breaks, and funky guitar samples....some wonderful stuff here! Would like to have seen something by Autechre or TBD....but you can't have everthing.....Highly Recommended!!!!!!! \|/ @--out----------*--+what-I-got-in-my-head-you-can't-buy-steal-or-borrow /|\ -Primal Scream --Paul p. I second that recommendation. There are a few songs on there I don't like, but the rest are well worth the price of admission. I'd say my favorites off of it are the A Guy Called Gerald and Air Liquide mixes. But that doesn't detract from the listenability of the whole thing. 2CDs and I can listen to it all the way through, and like it. You've got a cool boss ;-) I wish my boss listened to this shtuff... It's not bad overall; there's enough range on it that it's interesting. What's sort of funny is that the supposed highlights (from Mute's radio rep) are the drum-n-bass tracks, which I can't say did much for me. On the whole, the more eclectic mixes were more appealing to me. I do have to go back and listen to the Air Liquide mix, though. My tops on this one has to be the "blade runner" remix of future days, done by Carl Craig. It's the kind of track that gets embedded into your consciousness, only to pop up days, weeks, or months later, and you can't place it for a while. I love the snares and the unintelligable vocal sounds, and it's cool the way he never brings in a solid kick drum, it's just those sharp snares and layers upon layers of pads. Bill / dj marathon p.s. - look for some new RealAudio on my page soon - I've got a armchair beats set to put up from this last week's radio show, plus some drum-n-bass, plus maybe some surprises. I'll post to the list when it's up. Quick teaser artist list for the beats set: [clatterbox/thievery corporation/a tribe called quest/autechre, + more]
