It's one of those happenings that lead me to believe I'm tuned in to something, or at least that there's no such thing as coincidence: not 10 minutes after making that post about "The Brazilianaire" being on Cujo's "AIF" CD (and being bummed that my trainspottin' ass might be forced to fork out the $ for the 2x10"), I go down to my local rekkid shop (2nd Ave to you PDXers) and spot a copy of "The Rumpus Rooms" 2xCD comp. on NineBar rekkids, for $14 no less. Of course, "The Brazilianaire" is on it, as one of the "exclusive" tracks! Great, I hate vinyl anyway. This comp has a lot of IDMish stuff on it, review as follows: T.Power Vs MK Ultra - "Claustrophobic Killers" - an uptempo rap number similar to "Stress Fractures" on "Waveform". Lots of chee-z gunshot samples for street cred. Dr. Rockit - "Fog" - the 1st thing by Rockit I've liked. I'd call it mellow Drill&Bass. Nice rhythms, nice chords. Signal 2 Noise/Prankster - "Nature Of Mind" - mellow acid, reminiscent of some of the Alt.Frequencies tracks. Not a real 303 though...have to ask a 303-crazy buddy for a positive ID. Probably a 101 or 202. Mighty Truth - "Tangatawhenua" - dope synth trip hop with real trumpet, though looping beats sound a bit lame after a steady diet of speed-morphing d&B. Jake Slazenger - "Toronto" - mp loops the beginning of some 70's R&B rekkid, drops in some manic breakbeats, and plays one of his trademark chee-z melodies over the top. Not my cup o' tea, but I'm sure his fans will drink it up. Sureshot - "Mindstorm" - boring D&B. Scanner - "Whirlwind Slut" - if you think Rimbaud's ambience is boring, you should hear his house...big yawn. Gravity Bass & Rising - "Ebb & Flow" - didn't do anything for me. Repeat - "Close" - I've been curious as to what Messers Broom & Hill were up to. Hopefully this track isn't representative. Unimaginative beats, unimaginative synth sounds, unimaginative flange on everything. DJ Food - "The Breaks Of Wrath" - great title, great sloppy breakbeats that are too slow for D&B, too fast for Trip Hop. Triangle Music, I guess. Shimmer - "Nocturnal" - ambient dub, too pretty. Earthtribe - "Eastbeat" - fucked up, vaguely eastern sounding, but I like it. Cujo - "The Brazilianaire" - now Chomp Samba is beginning to make a little more sense. This is brazilian trip hop to CS's mad d&B. Thoughtful piano with latin rhythms, and a great panning weirdness in the chorus. The kind of track that grows on ya.. Dirty Beatniks - "Perfect Rhyme" - jazzy d&B in the right kinda way. If you like Cujo, you'll like this. Submerged - "Damage Done" - a quirky little piece of techno. Very unconventional, one of the better tracks on the comp. Best Boy Electric - "Music Box" - I could have easily mistaken the minimalist clicks and simplistic melodies for Freeform... The Entertainer - "Sankei" - almost industrial. MLO - "Son Of Sam" - ear and speaker shredding noise. Press the eject! Overall, about a .500 batting average, normal for a comp, but that's the low end of the scale as far as comps I keep. Che
