Why some people deciede to do things is absoltuely beyond me. I received an e-mail today from Multsanta letting me know that someone had ripped off my discography from the Squarepusher page and placed it on his own site. Not a big deal, there are 3 other sites that are using my discography formatted differently and with proper credit and linkage. However, this guy has gone totally over the fucking edge. Not only has he ripped off my HTML exactly and all my gaphics but he has given me no credit for my work and instead credited it to himself! He doesn't even include one mention of me or a link to my page. Here is the offending site so you can see for yourself: http://www.islandia.is/~junglizt/pusher.html Notice any similarities? Needless to say I was pretty pissed off about him ripping off my stuff. I sent him this letter today:

And this is the reply I just recieved....

Needless to say, I am even fucking more pissed off at this idiot now. If anyone can see how he changed it so it's not mine please let me know. The only thing I can see that he changed is the link to e-mail me no longer e-mails me but e-mails him! And it gets even worse! If you follow the links to and other the other sections from the toolbar it says that he hasn't copied those yet and god knows what the fuck he's going to do there. So can someone on the list plese tell me what I can do to stop this guy? Perhaps some of the people who are into the page can write him e-mail and let him know how fucked up it is to steal someone elses page. I'll tell you one thing. Junglizt writes some of the worst fucking jungle mods available to man. Search the archives at cdrom.com for his stuff. It's terrible. Makes my ears bleed feces. I've worked hard, long fucking hours trying to complete the Luke Vibert discography + would be steaming mad at dirt if someone ripped it off me. As an anti-theft method, there's a hideously untrue bit of information on the LV discography I placed there last year. Add this to 'losing yer girlfriend' and 'eating ramen noodles' to the list of The Perils of Trainspotting. g.

one thing you can try is ask him to say that he stole it from you.. since he's already got that on there.

heh I always put a (C) notice on all my pages, and the ppl don't know it's not (C) (well, they do now).. that is fully 100% legal when it comes to stuff that doesn't really matter like modules, etc.. You should probably put on your Sqrepshr page some (C)'s from Rephlex etc. to keep yourself out of trouble, and say only the HTML and gfx are (C) by you (if you indeed made them)

there's nothing you can do, besides mailbombing him or send him a mailinglist bomb (auto-subscribe him to shitloads of mailinglists, hah but it won't work for any of the Hyperreal lists, coz it requires it to be confirmed =) but that isn't the most nice thing to do, but you can do it anyway if you feel you must :D

nopes.. that's just what everybody does, because they don't feel like going trhough all the paperwork to copyright something. I talked to a friend at an ISP once about it, and he said that he doesn't know, his lawyer does all that shit, and at that point I started writing © on stuff like everyone else.

not unless it's REALLY copyrighted, which I seriously doubt.. usually, no one cares about that, but if that page was already really copyrighted he could get in serious trouble.

Hmm, this reminds me of when Sony Techno in Japan used the Jimi Tenor disco- graphy (http://www.sci.fi/~phinnweb/tenor.html) compiled by me on their Web page (http://www.sme.co.jp:80/Music/Info/SonyTechno/featureE/9703/disco.html) + also the record sleeve images I had received from my mate Samu Mielonen. OK, this guy representing Sony wrote to me afterwards to ask the permission (note: after they had already put the discog to their page), and I didn't know what to do except say to yes, since I just thought it's great if it can give more international coverage to Jimi, being a local Finnish artist who I want to naturally support any way I can. Later I got some second thoughts about this thing, though. I was honoured but I only wish they would have just credited me there or linked my page, not to even talk about paying me for my efforts... (As they say, I'm not greedy but it's just a question of principle... ;) In your case, Gonzi, we are talking about another private individual ripping off your page, but Sony is a goddamn multinational corporation, for fuck's sake! I've given this thing a bit thought lately, and I don't really know what I ought to do. (Of course, I'm not the guy to cast the first rock with what comes to copyrights, but at least I just maintain my page as a fan only; I don't do business or gain any commercial profit from pHinnWeb, if I can say anything for my defense - read: http://www.sci.fi/~phinnweb/copyright.html.) Good luck, Gonzi, and hope you'll get the right to what justifiably belongs to you.

Does anyone know the speed of his internet connection? I know that's a tricky one, but if his connection is at the ole 33.6K, a few LARGE image and sound files could cause his download time to be quite excrusiating <insert evil "he he">. But, of course, if he's of the priviliged kind (like Gonzi, I may add) with the ole Cable modem or high speed line.. this line of action would do no good. Considering he's in a different country, however, he probably has the stock 28.8 or 33.6.. He sure has lots o web space, though.. and what a waste.. using it for all those horrible sound files ;-P Kev (trying to plot revenge for Gonzi) -- FreyGuy <Everyday is Freyday> Network/Notes Administrator Hansen Corporation *kevfrey@evansville.net kfrey@hansen-motor.com http://www.evansville.net/~kevfrey/ Rule #8 from the Horror Movie Character's Survival Guide: "As a general rule, don't solve puzzles that open the portels to hell." np: South of Market EP

No. No paperwork is necessary to copyright something. No © is necessary. After the Berne convention, once you create something (and publish it), you have the copyright. It's really that simple. As someone who's had "my" discography (<URL:http://www.evo.org/eyesore.html>) copied extensively; linked to from all over the placed; published on cd-rom by other people and so on, I find this possessiveness displayed by some people here a bit silly. I did the discography to provide a service to the community, not to become "famous", not to make people "grateful", not to make money. If people find a way to make use of what I've done in creative ways I haven't foreseen -- great! The point (for me, at least) is to have the (hopefully useful) information accessible for the people who might need it. -- (domestic pets only, the antidote for overdose, milk.) larsi@ifi.uio.no * Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen
