Underworld Second Toughest In The Infants Junior Boys Own Out March 11 I'm not going to preach about what an important band Underworld are. Everyone knows by now that these press darlings were one of the key elements in the smashing of the dance/indie divide a few years ago. Everyone also knows that 'Dubnobasswithmyheadman' was a wonderful, unique album which took elements from countless genres and created a snapshot of a scene which was starting to open its mind. But how will this second album fare three years on, in today's diverse and eclectic scene which they helped pave the way for? 'Juanita' kicks off proceedings, an epic symphony of solid, pounding techno. Building up from a robotic, skittering percussion loop with Karl's processed monotones and familiar spiralling analogue motifs, breaking down into a rhythm workout with reversed, out-of-control synths before building back up to a blinding, searing climax. This is Underworld back on classic floor-destroying form, and from here things can surely get no better? But they do. 'Banstyle' is the inevitable jungle track, a light and crispy prelude to 'Sappys Curry', which emerges as the breaks disintegrate. Slicing the tempo in two, subtle layers of soft guitar evolve around a hypnotic, head-nodding groove, building until the breakbeats are simmering just below the surface. Never quite exploding back into jungle territory, the tension is nonetheless maintained right the way through. 'Confusion The Waitress' follows, a minimal electronic groove allowing Karl's intriguing lyricism to shine through. 'Rowla' is a fierce dancefloor cut, with insane, tearing analogues and slamming beats. Things really fall into place again with 'Pearls Girl'. Kicking breakbeat techno with more insane, distorted vocal ranting - another classic, unique cut. 'Air Towel' is a more sedate, Detroit-styled track, the influence of Darren Emerson's DJing style shining through here the most clearly. The unmistakable vocals blend with the endlessly repeating synth loop with a mesmerising end result. 'Blueski' is a brief diversion into raw, mellow guitar before the album closes with 'Stagger' - a wonderful slow vocal-based track which builds from nothing to a haunting, spine-tingling climax. With this album, Underworld have showed once again their effortless mastery of the dance genre. Working better as a whole than 'Dubnobass...', it highlights the work of a maturing outfit doing exactly what they please, both drawing from and adding to the cream of the scene. Eclectic, diverse and consistently good, 'Second Toughest' is an oasis of quality grooves in a saturated music world. see ya _________________________________________________ tom churchill e-mail: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk deep beatmeister extraordinaire _________________________________________________

I saw a listing for the new Underworld CD as a 2CD listing. Anyone know what the second CD is? Remixes? New 808 State out 03/29 - called "Joyrider" Planetary Assault Systems "Archives" (Peace Frog) - is this new stuff from Luke Slater, or just reissue of old material? Picked up new Spooky EP - as good as the previous two, plus new Eat Static CDS. Haven't heard this one yet. Paul Rafanello onnow: Yen Pox "Blood Music"

Before Dubnobasswithmyheadman (and before Darren Emerson joined), Underworld released two albums on Sire as Underworld (Underneath The Radar and Change The Weather) and before that, two on Epic/CBS as Freur (Doot-Doot and Get us Out Of Here). Thir earlier material was a lot poppier, which is why they sometimes like to pretend it doesn't exist. -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo)

There's a 6 track 3x12" set as well, which probably has all the CD tracks on it (haven't compared them, as I'm not much of an Underworld fan), but it's pretty limited - something like 3000 copies I think. Maarten

Was "Born Slippy" simply reissued as it was, or with new versions? What's this about a "Dark & Long" CD? The original release was 1 CD and 2 12" singles, with little overlap among them, and very extended mixes on the 12"s. Spooky 'Schmoo' [GRRR45] 1. original version 2. stripped down dub mix 3. steppin razor mix 4. underworld mix I got Schmoo a couple of months ago, paid a hefty price for it too. In all honesty, I got it for the Underworld (re)mixes as 'schmoo' itself reminds me too much of dutch tv adverts for telephone sex. 'oooh ahhh' and 'come to me' repeated threethousandmillion times ... (1) and (2) for obvious reasons don't differ much from the two versions on 'Gargantuan' (schmoo and schmoodub) in their ooh-ahh-ness. I really like (3) and (4) though ... the Underworld touch saves this 12" for me. The steppin razor mix gives us clanking sounds, Russian gibberish and distorted ooh-aah (in the beat). Underworld drive the 'old' Spooky motor extremely well ... Talking about Underworld: how come I rarely see anybody write about them on idm? Are they not intelligent enough (anymore)? Getting rid of the all pervading soul diva's was the best thing they ever did. It took me a while to get used to what I rather derogatorily called 'church music', i.e. the organsounds on Stereo, but once I put my bias out to pasture I fell for it. Still more 'dance' than 'brain' though, is what I thought as I danced my feet off when they played in Amsterdam last March. oc> chasing this stuff to ground. "I'm invisible" so anyway, I was inspired to write something about Underworld from the post about Spooky. I know nothing of the latter, but the Underworld mixes on that single sound interesting. I personally found a love for Underworld after their last album. Even with my love for them, I can't really listen to the album all the way through. I really love tracks one(all three parts), four, and five the best. Pearls Girl is the bomb!!! Their live set at Organic was really amazing. After seeing them live, I really* got into them a lot more. Now I know why London was positively buzzing over them when the album came out. on now: "Cherry Pie" (not Warrant, Underworld!!) _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_- J A M E S B E N J A M I N G I L L U N F O R T U N A T E L Y L I V I N G I N A R I Z O N A J G I L L @ U . TVT did release a domestic 12" of Pearls Girl/Juanita I believe. I saw it this weekend in Minneapolis at Let it Be records. It didn't say that it had any special mixes or anything, but each song looked as if they were both around 17 minutes long. Didn't get it though. Only enough money for the Mike and Rich, and Aphex Twin Classics vinyls. Question: triple 12" of Pearls Girl!!?? Woa! Where can one get ahold of such a gem? Question again: "Limited Edition Aphex Twin Classics on Couloured vinyl" Why was only one record coloured? The first one is a lovely powder blue, but the second record is just plain black. Euch! Bit of a letdown, that, after seeing the first one. At least the music kicks! _________ (___,-, \ "Why don't you admit it, / ,\ \ AFX you don't have the balls /,_) \ \ Aphex Twin to be a queer...." Dunno about "Underneath the Radar", but forget "Change the Weather" if you are lookin' for the more recent Underworld style. CTW seems to be the pre Price (?) packaged-as-a-new-pop-band version...avoid it at all costs. I've heard there is a long lost thing under the name "Lemon Interrupt"(?) which is chronologically just before "Dubno.." but have never actually seen it. jeff

I believe they're now signed to Richard Branson's V2 worldwide. WT!/TVT did release that UW video compilation a couple months back though. -- Lazlo Nibble | "There's no moral, Uncle Remus, just lazlo@swcp.com | random acts of meaningless violence." http://www.swcp.com/lazlo | -- Michael O'Donoghue

Speaking of which, has anybody else seen the _mmm skyscraper i love you_ book? It's a coffee-table book of skyscraper art designed to accompany dubnobasswithmyheadman. I saw it last weekend at Virgin (also the only place I've seen carry Simon Reynolds' _Energy Flash_ in the US if you absolutely must read about the crusties/hear the CD) and my companion and I had a good laugh for a couple minutes before going on to browse their ample supply of October publications. I can't really say that there would be any reason to own the thing; on the other hand, I'm glad that the Underworld aspire to pop-cult dreams of pretension previously only occupied by Madonna's wannabe art-porn. I'm also quite pleased to see that Ryoki Ikeda will be getting the red carpet treatment at XI. I went there to see David First perform last week (as part of their annual festival of intermedia performances) and Phill knows how to set his loft up for serious sound. Mr. First had already started his organesque drone by the time I arrived. The sub-woofer-resident bass frequencies rose at a subconscious pace, which I realized only after my head felt inflated by an unseen pressure. After about half an hour, the background sounds had peaked and I snapped out of the hypnogogic trance as if a fever had broke. Subsequently, my mind was clear to follow First's processed slide guitar sounds, which slipped and slid over the nebulous tonal mesh not unlike early Gottsching sitting in on an Airway practice session. After another half an hour, the tonal skein began to twist very slowly, occasionally passing by a harmonically devastating checkpoint during its slow repositioning and fade (echoes of the original THX trailer and the end of Messaien's "L'Ascension"). Oops, I lost track there... the point being that this ain't your average boombox/PA sound so I'd advise you to arrive early enough that you can choose a seat smack dab in the middle of the speakers (but not too early that you interrupt their dinner). After witnessing the "what dub records should I start with" thread sweep like brush fire across three mailing lists in the last few weeks, I thought I'd call attention to the recent collections of Upsetters singles that have recently been issued on Trojan. I've yet to actually hold vol 1 in my hands, but if vol 2 is any indication.... It's a 2CD packaged inside a hardbound book with a great photo of Mr. Scratch himself smoking it up for the camera (part of a terrific series of eight that can be found in the booklet inside). Since vol 2 is all singles from 1970, it's obviously not dub, but rather Perry's late 60s take on American soul. The singles often starred the vocal stars of the day and they are always backed by the superb Upsetters (who were essentially an organ-led combo at the time). The overall feel is smooth and easygoing, with flashes of Perry's distinction in the background (esp on the lead-off cut, the perfect "Kill Them All"). It makes a fine companion to that first Stax singles box in style, power and consistency. Lastly, anybody care to hold forth on the Cheap label? It's seemingly all the rage in my household these days, btwn Cube & Sphere's magnificent breaks work, the best Sluta Leta 12" to ever have graced my ears and a pretty upstanding effort from Elin (though not as striking as "Satanic Soul" on Pomelo- whew!). I know that Sluts 'n Strings et al have commanded much bandwidth in the past, but what other fine treasures lay in the back catalog? -rob
