hey. a week or so ago i asked what was the first example of drill&bass/fungle, and a coupla people replied that it was aphex's remixes for wagonchrist's _redone_ ep. someone else counter-replied that they thought the first plug ep came out before that. well, a glance at the luke vibert homepage shows that _redone_ came out in september '95, and plug's "visible crater funk" came out 4 months before that, in may '95. i suppose it's possible aphex did his remix many months earlier than it was released, and that vibert, inspired by it, recorded his first plug single, released it, and then months later released _redone_. anyone have any ideas what the real deal is? (i know, i know -- most of you don't care fuck-all about this; but i'm writing an article about the topic and i'm supposed to get these sort of details right [if only so you people don't flame me as a know-nothing when my article comes out.;)]) or anyone have any idea if there's another track (perhaps by another artist?) that is a more likely candidate for the first fungle production? thanks jeff

In several interviews Richard James has said that Vibert's Plug material influenced him. So I'd say that Plug 1 is the original 'fungle' release. Not to split hairs, but the Aphex 'remix' (or rather, original track) on "Redone", and just about everything he's done since, is somewhat of a different breed as it uses original drum programming and not sampled breaks as its rhythmic premise. So I guess it depends on what your basic parameters of 'fungle' are. GD
