overall rating: good if mildly samey collection of computer music remixes of computer music. there are no bad tracks on here -- nothing i would feel i needed to skip, but also nothing that truly blew me away. if your'e into the minutia of the laptop scene, however, there are several excellent tracks, and more than enough quality material to justify picking it up. * jim o'rourke: after hearing o'rourke open for nobukazu takemura on their recent tour i was really anxious for some laptop work by him on cd. this is the first step toward satisfaction. extrememly high-fidelity, microsocopic computer music in the mego vein, if a bit cleaner (maybe closer to tetsu inoue's "waterloo terminal," on second thought, mixed with a good dose of fennesz). outstanding track. * lithops: the most digital lithops track yet released. the smudgy textures are still there, but the whole thing is cleaner and "smaller" sounding, sparser and less structured. sort of like the b-side to the static caravan 7-inch, but with the hyperclean surface polish of the laptop set. good not great. * marcus schmickler: very much in the vein of "wabi sabi" and the recent "rator-rotas," though with an element of humor not necessarily found on those releases (pulverized samples of harmonica; brief, abrupt vocal outbursts; etc.). noisey and a bit "difficult," but by no means ostentatious. one of the strongest tracks. * gescom: a nice five minutes of noisy sonic choppery, but without much development. (the same could probably be said for a few other of the tracks included here, but i love harshing on autechre any chance i get...) interesting and fun and all that, but not a high point. grain of salt, etc. sc onnow: arovane : atol scrap (din) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
